Peat fires are extremely challenging for firefighters to deal with. Unlike traditional fires which burn up into the air peat fires burn deep down into the ground and can smolder, hidden, for months. Scientists call these zombie fires and they are becoming more common.

I’ve always been amazed at the skill pilots (aerial firefighting pilots) show when they maneuver to drop fire retardant from those giant planes. Turns out there’s more to it than I even realize—the retardant itself can be very destructive!
