If I wanted to spread a message in the United States, I wouldn’t go there and start speaking Latin. The first instinct of early Christians was to speak the message, since most were illiterate. The message was written down a little later on.

For the oral tradition to uphold these accounts, it must have meant there was a community (keyword) of early Christians that could confirm its accuracy.

If we have many witnesses testifying on what the first hand accounts were, and they all seem to line up, well then we can be pretty sure we have something resembling the first hand account.

All this to say the criticism that has been done on the reliability of the Gospels hardly calls into question anything about the faith. As your friend Bart Ehrman will tell you, his scholarship was not at all related to him stepping away from Christianity.
