On June 8, 1982, Argentine pilots dove so low over Bluff Cove that several of their bombs physically couldnβt detonate. The fuses needed distance to arm. They hadnβt given them enough.
It didnβt matter. The ones that did go off were enough.
Sir Galahad caught fire with over 150 Welsh Guards still in her hold. Men jumped into burning water. Others carried wounded comrades across decks that were cooking beneath their boots. The ship burned for three days straight.
You can still find the footage.
Sir Tristram was hit too. Between the two ships, 56 men were killed and more than 150 wounded in a single afternoon. It remains the British militaryβs deadliest day of combat since the Second World War.
The attack lasted eight minutes.
What makes it cut deeper: the British had air cover arranged for that morning. It was stood down due to a miscommunication between commanders. The ships sat stationary and unprotected in broad daylight while Welsh Guards waited below deck for orders that were too slow in coming.
The Falklands were retaken 14 days later. Argentina surrendered on June 14. The men who died at Bluff Cove never saw it.
56 names. Remember them.
#OnThisDay 110 yrs ago in 1916, HMS HAMPSHIRE struck a German mine & sank off Orkney with the loss of 737 men. One of the dead was the Secretary of State for War, the man who had assembled the largest volunteer army in UK history, Field Marshall Lord Kitchener. Only 12 survived.
Today we remember the men and women involved in the great crusade and the largest amphibious operation in history.
Crew of @HMSDragon took time during operations in the Arabian Sea to pay a traditional flight deck tribute to all those involved in #DDay and Operation Neptune.
We will remember them. ππ»ββοΈππ»π¬π§ππ»π. Thank you for your service and sacrifices ladies and gents. π¬π§πΊπΈπ¨π¦π¦πΊπ§πͺπ¨πΏπ«π·π¬π·π±πΊπ³π±π³πΏπ³π΄π΅π±πΏπ¦πΏπΌ

The word βAloofβ also has its origin in the days of sail probably from the Dutch word loef later luff in English meaning to windward and away from a lee shore, from where danger lies. It now means βdistantβ for that very reason.
Harry Kane has spoken out in defence of his wife Kate after cruel comments on Instagram claimed he "could do better" and labelled her as not being a typical WAG.
Describing her as "endearing, funny, kind and beautiful," Kane opened up about the hurt caused by online abuse when questioned by a journalist.
"It's far too easy for people to go online, throw out abuse, and carry on like it's normal," he said.
A class act as always.
