๐จ BREAKING: US-Iran tensions flare up again โ How this could hit SA fuel prices hard
As of 10 June 2026, fresh tit-for-tat strikes between the US and Iran have rattled markets, with Iran targeting assets near the Strait of Hormuz and the US responding with strikes on Iranian defences. The fragile ceasefire is under severe pressure.
Why this matters for South Africans at the pump:
โข South Africa imports nearly ALL its crude oil and much of its refined fuel.
โข The Strait of Hormuz carries ~20% of global seaborne oil. Any disruption (attacks on tankers, naval threats, insurance spikes) sends Brent crude soaring.
โข Current volatility has already pushed Brent toward $90โ$110+/barrel. A prolonged escalation could see it spike much higher.
Local impact via the Basic Fuel Price (BFP) formula:
โข Higher international oil prices + elevated shipping costs + rand weakness = sharp increases at the pump.
โข Petrol and especially diesel could rise by several rand per litre in coming adjustments.
โข Diesel-sensitive sectors (road freight, mining, agriculture, logistics) will feel it first, pushing up food, transport and goods prices.
This comes on top of SAโs own refining woes and existing high fuel costs. Government may consider levy relief, but relief is never instant.
Markets hate uncertainty. Keep an eye on next monthโs fuel price announcement.

BREAKING: Explosive new revelations at the Madlanga Commission implicate EFF leader Julius Malema in providing political protection to embattled SAPS Major-General Feroz Khan.
WhatsApp messages extracted from devices linked to Khan and shared with tobacco businessman Mohamed Sayed of Carnilinx have been tabled at the Commission. In one exchange, Sayed relayed a message from Malema to Khan amid disciplinary pressures: โI forgot to tell you that Ju called me, said that you will not ever resign, no matter what, this is a fight and we will emerge victorious.โ
The investigatorโs report details alleged collusion between Khan, Sayed, and Malema, including efforts to influence the removal of former Inspector-General of Intelligence Dr Selumanthuro Dintwe, leaks of confidential information, and other interactions.
Malemaโs name also appears prominently in Khanโs contact list, alongside figures like Adriano Mazzotti. The Commission stresses that communication alone does not imply wrongdoing, but the nature of these links will be probed further when Khan testifies on 1 July.
This comes amid broader Madlanga probes into criminal syndicates infiltrating SAPS Crime Intelligence, tender manipulation claims (including past Tshwane security tenders), and political interference in policing.
Malema has previously dismissed such allegations as attempts to drag the EFF into internal police battles. More fireworks expected as the Commission heads into its final stretch.
