When two #OKPreps schools lack enough players for a sport, they can form a co-op.

Battiest fall baseball coach Chris Gibbs entered the season with barely nine players—and the ninth wasn’t fully committed. “Sleepless nights,” he said of the situation.

At the Oklahoma Coaches Clinic, Stuart coach Josh Williams approached him about teaming up.

Stuart has reached the Fall Baseball State Tournament three consecutive years, but this year, transfers took a heavy toll and that left them with only 5 players.

They contacted the OSSAA and reached out to every bordering school about a co-op (an OSSAA requirement). No other school was interested.

Even though the schools are over two hours apart, the two programs agreed to join forces, and Williams asked Gibbs to coach the combined team. Gibbs accepted.

They will play mostly Battiest’s schedule, plus Stuart’s annual tournament and three additional Stuart home games. The teams have practiced together only twice so far, but the season is now in full swing.

They’ll compete at the top of Class A. And according to Coach Gibbs, their jerseys and hats will feature the obvious nickname: BS!

With the new transfer rules, this year will see more fall baseball co-ops than ever before. Will this become the new normal?

What are your thoughts?
