There's a lot of this catechism going on today, which is entirely wrong. However, I do not think it is wrong for readers to desire to read certain types of literature. It's their money and time, after all.

But to expect that literature would be soft and kind to our sensibilities is an error, for what human truth will, therefore, be found in works that tame reality and the hard truths that shapes our perceptions and comprehension of life, and the world we live in?

While there's escape fiction, works that aren't clearly "escape" cannot afford to be convenient, coddling, correct, or even sterile and without any real conflict. For its reader will learn nothing from it; neither will it have any transformative power on readers.

Writing and literature are ways of thinking, which should reflect on readers. This is what good literature does. Escape fiction doesn't really give one much to think about than thrill and excitement, which are passing, and even boring after some time.

We need literature that disturbs us, that challenges our ways of thinking, that makes us inconvenient to the false truths and beauty and comforts we hold on to.
