Laurie Santos: “Our minds just naturally keep things separate.”
The financial point: mental accounts make identical dollars feel nonfungible. A deliberate pause can reveal which account is funding the purchase.
The usual model treats an impulsive purchase as a willpower failure. Santos’s explanation points to an earlier problem: the mind has already classified the money before checkout begins.
Savings can occupy a protected account while a refund, windfall, or coupon creates an “extra money” account. Economically, the dollars remain fungible. Psychologically, one pool feels easier to spend.
A deliberate pause works as household risk control when it interrupts that classification. Make the payment amount visible, remove the “extra” label, and name the account that will be smaller afterward.
The useful question is not only, “Can this account cover the purchase?” It is, “Would the purchase still qualify if every dollar were treated as part of the same balance sheet?”
This reframing does not determine the right choice. It gives liquidity and long-term priorities a clearer place in the comparison than willpower alone may provide.
