Vitalik Buterin Sees Strong Odds For Major Cryptography Breakthrough

Ethereum cofounder Vitalik Buterin (@VitalikButerin) sees a 60% chance SNARKs, FHE and iO reach single digit overhead.

Here, overhead means the extra computing power, energy and cost needed for cryptographic security. For example, 10x overhead means a protected computation could require roughly ten times more resources.

Buterin also sees a 33% chance that all three approach almost zero additional overhead. He believes SNARKs could reach single digit overhead before the decade ends.

He compared the progress with specialized hashes and some LLM inference.

Buterin also praised Poseidon and STARK researchers for major advances in cryptographic efficiency.
