Every day I am in awe of international students. Doing a PhD in your native language and home country is hard. Doing it in a non-native language, in a different country and different culture is so much harder. You are not stupid. You are legends.
@SCampbellstaton Lol this guy was in my matriculating class at my tiny liberal arts college in Wisconsin 7 years ago. No clue where he's at now, but he was absolutely know by everyone on campus as "that guy from that viral video" 😂
It's been a long week of not having access to my ADHD medication due to a national shortage along with seeing all the anti-trans legislation being passed. But today I woke up to a NOA for my F31 and I found a pharmacy with my prescription in stock 🙌
I actually made my therapist cry this week talking about the impact that recent events and political rhetoric on trans issues have been having on me lately. I genuinely fear for my safety, but I'm also finding new meaning in my career aspirations of becoming a biology educator.
The system is set up to exploit individuals (both grad students and PI’s) and their enthusiasm for science at the cost of excluding those who for lack of privilege cannot survive this exploitation. Now, even the most privileged find themselves struggling. Something has to give
“The only solution is to do less science more humanely…Trainees are undercompensated—and they’re fighting back. It’s time for institutions and senior investigators to change their mindsets and bring more humanity into a research and training ecosystem that has lost its way.”
It's not even that we think Trump will actually get reelected. It's that eradicating trans people is an explicit conversation in American politics. And that there are enough constituents out there for which that is a rally cry.
