@ninadelaflores Teacher here: the way we teach “context clues” is proven to be ineffective at teaching kids critical thinking. Teaching kids to break words down and understand affixes is a much better strategy. In elementary it’s decoding. At the upper level, it’s morphology.
Happy 39th birthday to Rebecca Sugar, born on July 9, 1987, in Silver Spring, Maryland. As an animator, writer, director, producer, storyboard artist and musician, Sugar has become one of the most important creative voices in modern animation.
Before creating Steven Universe, Sugar worked on Adventure Time, helping shape some of the show’s most emotional and musical moments. In 2013, they made animation history with Steven Universe, a Cartoon Network series about love, identity, family, trauma, healing and self-acceptance.
The series became beloved for its heartfelt storytelling, beautiful music, rich world-building and groundbreaking LGBTQ+ representation. Moments like Ruby and Sapphire’s wedding helped make Steven Universea cultural milestone in children’s animation.
Music has always been a major part of Sugar’s work, from the emotional songs in Steven Universe to their own personal music career, including the album Spiral Bound.
On their 39th birthday, fans celebrate Rebecca Sugar for bringing honesty, compassion and courage to animation. Their work continues to inspire people to embrace love, creativity and who they truly are.
