“Poor little princess.”
The voice reverberated like a dark melody, like putrid oil. The darkness swept around her, an animate being, almost human now, swirling through the air.
“Her father dead, her kingdom gone. All alone. So fine, so young. Too young to die.”
“What is this?” Irina managed to say, her voice hardly a whisper.
“This . . .” It chuckled. “This . . .”
Irina stood slowly. “What are you?”
“The When.”
“What?”
The darkness laughed again, and now it seemed to form something of a face. Eyes like black holes stared at her while the mouth laughed.

Next level goalpost shifting and projection. Most right-wing people have no problem with empathy. They have a problem with with what @GadSaad calls suicidal empathy
John C. Reilly: “Why aren’t people on the right wing concerned about human rights? They’re human too. Elon Musk says don’t be fooled by the empathy trap. Empathy is not a trap, empathy is a superpower. It’s what makes human beings exceptional, our ability to look outside ourself”
Finished Falling Angel by William Hjortsberg.
I was recommended it as an example of noir detective/horror.
I legitimately don't understand how it has such high ratings. The prose fluctuated between being awkward and good. The MC was an annoying jerk who was objectively terrible at his job and fairly dumb. The plot was held together with the thinnest of threads. There was nothing even remotely frightening about it. It felt like a poor copy of Chandler with some paranormal thrown in for a bit of horror.
It just...wasn't great.

@HannahsHermits There's something to be said for a Linux system built into the machine specifically for its hardware. And the size, of course. But it certainly is a more of a special item for a very specific audience.
