I HAVE A ASK: How does borehole tax improve water supply to residents? What is the link between taxing a hole I have bored alone because of gasping municipal tapes, and my having uninterrupted flow of water the morning after? More so when the levying institution has nothing to do with water body-building or water supply???

My Life of Privilege, Access & Favor

I shared a few encounters I had with the President before he became President. The nether world shook. Ghosts appeared guns blazing. Some real people joined in too.

Suddenly, everything about my life was reduced to “privilege” and “access.”

So let’s talk about it.

I am not extraordinary. I have slightly above-average talent and attributes. I take IQ tests regularly. Sometimes I score above 145. Sometimes I don’t. When I’m in the company of people who are not so smart, I feel very smart. But when I encounter very smart people, I feel very stupid.

I am simply a beneficiary of privilege, favor, and access. That is what I have always been. People might have given me more credit than I am actually due.

My story of access, privilege, and favor began when I was very young. And it continues.

I’ll explain, thread by thread and day by day. I will pick on a few highlights that have shaped who I am.

My father was an only child, a Charumbira from Masvingo. Following differences with the extended family, he left the family farm after his father died. I have no memory of my grandfather.

My father eventually settled at Lawrence Futter’s farm, Golden Dollar, in Lalapansi. There he became a foreman.

Our mere settlement in that area was itself an undeserved act of favor. Favor from God this time.

When AFM white pioneers from South Africa came to support the local church before I was born, they preached the gospel in the area. Many people were converted, starting with a Ndevere family, then the Ndokwana family, a family I adored and considered part of our own.

I am told that my younger sister Sarah (whom we call Maipatty) and I became seriously ill when we were young. We could not eat or drink. They believed we would die. I don’t know why. Maybe because at that time, many children who fell sick just died and were buried on riverbeds.

Tete Miriam Ndokwana took us to a mountain to pray. She spent days with us. She only brought us back after we had healed.

The only memories I have of that incident are a jar of water from which we drank, and the Mlezu River where she washed Sarah’s nappies.

My mother, my eldest sister Mai Abraham, and my eldest brother Emmanuel (all of whom are alive) can tell this story better. Maybe it is time I sit down with them and get a clearer story out of them.

Both my little sister and I survived by favor. We did not deserve to be healed in the manner we were healed. Many children of the same age died those days.

From then on, I have received undeserved favor from people and from God. The pattern has been consistent to the present day.

In another post another day, I will explain why my eldest sister was given the name, Notice. And how a sermon I heard Sekuru vaMachemedze preach when I was very young inspired me to save my sister Sarah after she had drowned in a deep well. With the life I have lived, I always get access and unmerited favor from people who matter. Even the late Morgan Tsvangirai used to have one on one meetings with me when he was Prime Minister. I don’t feel insulted when all my hard work is reduced to “Access” and “favor”.
