There are almost three million landlords in the UK - more than all of the NHS staff, care workers, and teachers combined. Landlordism is our national industry, and it is long overdue a reckoning.
My review of @NickBano's 'Against Landlords', for the @LRB https://t.co/FSlBz1D6NL
Can't say this enough. We know why @UKLabour isn't talking about rent caps and rent controls, but that doesn't make it right. @NEF predicts £70billion spent on Rent benefits between 2024-29. It is clearly incompetence or corruption to ignore this.
@LDNRentersUnion Thing is about the Labour Party, I do actuallly support cutting welfare spending* in order to force people** into work.
*through rent controls
**landlords
For our third episode, @clara_ish and @Jack_Witek got a lesson about racial capitalism in British housing and how left YIMBYism will never save us from @NickBano

As ever, Nick cuts right to the heart of the issues plaguing the housing system: kids are growing up homeless whilst landlords squeeze as much profit as possible from renters & the public purse
The grotesque nature of today’s private rented sector proves that landlords are incapable of behaving themselves unless we force them to. We must hear their collective cry for regulation.

Prime Minister Starmer's lapidary statement re the Gaza genocide is problematic in at least two respects: 1. it gives the impression that what happened on Oct7 may remotely justify the military course that has ensued (which it does not, in any possible way); 2. it casts a shadow on the ongoing work of the ICJ (South Africa v Israel; Nicaragua v Germany) - after the World Court recognised the plausible risk of genocide within 15 days from the starting of the proceedings (clearly the rapidity of the first response underscores the seriousness of the case).
I trust UK international law scholars and practitioners will make their voice heard, and stand firmly against the politicization of int'l law.
@danhancox Hello, yes, I'm a liberal and I want to point out that the notorious slaver was in fact a philanthropist, and also to somehow get indignant that you didn't mention lynch mobs.
Very good book. Clear, angry and not afraid to call bullshit. Enjoyed the point that the violence of Rachmanism is no longer necessary to evict renters and increase rents as the law itself can now be used instead via 'no fault' evictions.
With the recent budget Labour whispered its first words of defiance to the bullying landlord lobby. A little louder for the people at the back, writes @NickBano. https://t.co/prIIAgfSLh
