Women in South Africa are learning how to use guns because they say they no longer feel safe.

We travelled to Johannesburg and Mamelodi township, where women told us fear had become part of everyday life. Some were survivors of violent abuse.

One woman we met, Lindiwe Zitha, described how her ex-boyfriend tried to kill her by setting her on fire. Now, she’s learning how to shoot.

In our latest edition of FourReal, Jamal Osman investigates why more women are learning how to defend themselves — and what it reveals about violence against women in South Africa.
