Cattle drives were a major economic activity in the 19th/early 20th C American West, From the end of the Civil War until 1890, some 27m cattle were driven from Texas to railheads in Kansas, for shipment to stockyards in Louisiana and points east.

A.A. Spaugh 1884 Wyoming arrived with a trail herd of Texas cattle in 1874. Became foreman of the Converse Cattle Company in 1880- in 1885 he began ranching on his own near the town of Manville. Look at that beauty of a horse!

Bill Drannan, Indian scout & friend of Kit Carson, as photographed by noted photographer Noah Hamilton Rose in San Antonio. Circa 1890-1895. Drannan passed away in 1913 and is buried in Mineral Wells. What a face! He resembles actor Will Geer aka Grandpa Walton on "The Waltons."
