Love how when the women have dominant champions - Martina, Chrissie, Steffi, Serena - it's claimed the women's tour is boring and competition not great enough. But when the men have the Big Three taking up all oxygen for 15 years, it's a "Golden Era." #WTA so much more fun now.
@jon_wertheim mailbag Q… Who is the best one slam winner? There are a lot of one slam winners who sort of came and went, but who is the best player to only win one slam? Roddick? Chang? Cilic? Ivanovic? Wozniacki? Mary Pierce?
2001: Federer (19) beats all time Slam champ Sampras in 4th of wimby in 5. Announces Fed to world and signals Sampras near the end.
2026: Fonseca (19) beats all time Slam champ Novak in 3rd of French in 5. Announces Joao and signals Novak near the end.
Sampras - 29
Novak - 39!
@swierczy@gonzomike read dirty snow and the blue room the last year and was obsessed - bought The Venice Train when I was in England bc it’s not in print here, but haven’t read yet. The guy was incredible
@jjvallejoa Agreed -- I find Novak to be among the most gracious, win or lose, at the post-match handshake. I'm a huge Fed fan, but I used to always cringe at how cold Fed was to Novak basically every single time.
@Shaptennispod Plus @JPegula has such an awesome all court game. Every single shot in the book. Chill demeanor. One of my absolute favorite players to watch. J-Peg would’ve been rock solid in any era.
@Vatel1675 Just read "In a Lonely Place" for the first time and walked around for days, numbed by her brilliance and berating myself for not reading earlier. Incredible novel. Expendable Man is next up.
@VeganJeffrey @BenHWinters @mulhollandbooks@nytimes A stunning novel. Read five years ago and still run it back in my head a ton. Thought provoking concept treated with consideration but also not afraid to be honest about the horrors that would accompany its world. Also built like a Swiss watch. So tight and controlled.
@BigSascha I hated Rune last year, but now he seems more mature, to me. I think he was hoping Stan would apologize or at least acknowledge the awkwardness of their last encounter b/c it was made so public. Maybe if Stan had said, "Hey, kid, you're doing okay" Holger would've been happy.
@DwyerMurphy Absolutely loved your novel. It's been delightfully kicking around in my skull the last month, like some kinda old friend. Just listened to a podcast interview, and for the life of me cannot figure out the "Vertigo bottle episode" chapter. What am I forgetting??
Ons and Barty (before retirement) play more like Roger than anyone on the men's tour. Total artists out there with aggressive mindsets, using big forehands and biting slice to control the rallies. Can seeming do anything. #USOpen2022#onsjabeur
@erktennis I wonder how many players learned and stuck with two handed backhands bc it was easier to hit as a kid… but who would’ve benefitted from the variety a one hander would’ve given them. Roddick comes to mind.
@christophclarey When I started watching as 12 year old in ‘86, I remember feeling the majors were THE majors. Agassi the only big gun from then (Tennis magazine had a little blurb about a 16 year old up and comer with cool hair in their November ‘86 issue) who didn’t play all four, I feel like.
