The problem with any annual tax based on property value is that property values aren’t ‘real’. We are living through a massive housing bubble where prices have been artificially inflated by cheap credit over decades. The current ‘value’ of someone’s home - especially if they’ve owned it for a long time - may not bear any relation to how much disposable income they have and certainly doesn’t reflect the amount of local services they consume. The tax as proposed by Burnham would therefore be just as arbitrary as the current council tax system. It would be better to name it a ‘proximity to the City of London’ tax.

The lack of any big (short-term) shifts in headline voting intention is not what I expected and suggests that much of the electorate isn't in a hurry to return to the old two-party system.
This is a reality that deserves more recognition from - in particular - the pro-Tory talking heads who are so dominant at The Times and Mail. They consistently over-focus on the personal ups and downs of individual politicians and consistently underestimate the ongoing impact of endless economic disruption, deepening cultural division, declining public sector performance and the similar politicisation of both method and personnel that voters see in Lib, Lab and Con.
Yep, in this focus on the long-term under-currents to their daily lives voters are wiser than most pundits.

Yes. And it never works ever to blame the previous administration. It’s just psychology. Blame the previous government is tantamount to saying you voted for them and they effed it up. Might as well say “you stupid idiots”. Same as Brexit if you think we’d have been better off remaining fine but don’t say “I told you so”. Goes down like a bucket of spew. Clever dickery isn’t very clever. It’s stupidity, in fact. My predecessor the late, great John Prescott used to say don’t blame the last lot for your own misgivings get on and change it. Don’t complain, campaign. Better off saying we inherited challenges and we think we can improve matters by doing this or that but we’d be really grateful for your support in letting us try to make things better.

One of the improvements we’re making to our candidate selection process is screening for this tendency. Conservatives are weeding out the self-absorbed who come into politics because they couldn’t get into showbiz.

For these poseurs, being an MP is not about legislating to make people’s lives easier, safer and richer but a platform to campaign for their personal hobby-horses and other self-promoting activity.

They waste a lot of Parliament’s time with trivia, creating unwelcome delays and distraction from their colleagues’ work and focus on serious matters.
