DECLARATION OF CANDIDACY: FOR THE OFFICE OF VICE-PRESIDENT SIERRA LEONE BAR ASSOCIATION
United we stand and divided we fall – we do not want to fall and, if we are to stand strong, we need to be united.
Learned Colleagues and Members of the Sierra Leone Bar Association,
With humility, conviction, and a deep sense of professional responsibility, I formally declare my intention to run for the office of Vice-President of the Sierra Leone Bar Association for 2026/2027.
I am Nicky Spencer- Coker, and I present myself for service at a critical moment in the history of our Bar and our Nation — a moment that calls for principled leadership, mutual respect, institutional renewal, professional solidarity, and an unwavering commitment to justice, integrity, and the rule of law.
As a Barrister and Solicitor of the High Courts of Sierra Leone for almost 14 years, my professional journey has been shaped by service, advocacy, and leadership, both nationally and internationally.
My national service includes legal advocacy as a State Counsel at the Law Officers Department and then Defence Counsel for the Legal Aid Board Sierra Leone; where I represented numerous Sierra Leoneans who could not afford legal representation. On the international stage I have served as First Secretary and Spokesperson of the Permanent Mission of Sierra Leone to the United Nations. In that role I represented our country with distinction, and engaged on critical global legal and policy issues.
In addition, I have served our noble profession in various executive positions; most notably as Vice-President of L.A.W.Y.E.R.S, and as the first woman Secretary of the General Legal Council - a position I held for seven years with distinction.
These experiences have strengthened my belief that the legal profession must remain a fearless guardian of constitutionalism, human rights, democratic governance, and access to justice for all.
Learned Colleagues, leadership is SERVICE and It requires courage, integrity, competence, and the ability to UNITE. I offer myself to serve as the Vice-President of the oldest Bar Association in Sub-Saharan Africa; with a sincere commitment to serve diligently, inclusively, and transparently.
I respectfully seek your support, prayers, and confidence as we work together to unite the Bar, build a stronger, more responsive, and more progressive Sierra Leone Bar Association.
May we continue to uphold the nobility of our profession and the enduring ideals of justice.
God bless the Sierra Leone Bar Association.
God bless the Republic of Sierra Leone.

The West African Internet Governance Forum is in Freetown, Sierra Leone 🇸🇱 this week. Yesterday I had the pleasure as serving as Mistress of Ceremonies for the Opening Ceremony and Moderating a panel on "Digital sovereignty and economic value in West Africa's integrated digital market".
My takeaways:
Digital sovereignty does not mean 'going it alone'. Collaboration, trust and investment is key for the ECOWAS region and Africa as a whole. We have enough regulations, agreements and conventions in the region. What we need now is IMPLEMENTATION.

This morning, in Geneva, we presented Sierra Leone’s human rights report to the UN Human Rights Council as part of the Universal Periodic Review process. In our country’s report, we presented in good faith the progress achieved since our last review in 2021, including important constitutional, legal, institutional, and policy reforms, as well as the challenges that remain and our ongoing efforts to address them. We addressed efforts made to strengthen human rights through protection of civil and political rights as well as investments in socio-economic rights. We affirmed Sierra Leone’s strong commitment to the full implementation of the Universal Periodic Review recommendations and to the continued strengthening of its human rights framework. The Government remains determined to build on the progress achieved, address remaining challenges, and advance a just, inclusive, and rights-based society grounded in dignity, equality, and the rule of law. We consider the UPR not only as a mechanism of accountability, but also as a valuable platform for shared learning, the exchange of best practices, and the strengthening of national human rights systems.
Good morning, afternoon, evening friends!
This is a bit of a late post as I am resurfacing after a bit of a hiatus.
#CSW70 at the #UN this year was a bit surreal. All of a sudden ideas, negotiations, terms that have been "settled language" in the global community for years have become contentious. What a time.
Anyway, this year at CSW, it was my pleasure to provide my services as a Technical Adviser to the Ministry of Gender and Children's Affairs, Republic of Sierra Leone.
At the same time, in my personal capacity I was invited to lend my voice to a critical discussion on intergenerational approaches to access to justice.
This side event was organized by UN Women, UNFPA, HelpAge International, and the Governments of Ireland, and Sweden on the 13th March.
I was asked to opine on "how communities and justice systems work together to challenge harmful and discriminatory norms without causing backlash?", with a focus on Sierra Leone, so I did.🙂

At the 70th Session of CSW in New York, Sierra Leone highlighted breaking financial barriers to women’s political leadership across ECOWAS REGION and advancing women farmers’ land, economic, and climate rights with @FAOSDGs to strengthen inclusive development.
Justice for reproductive rights must be a reality! ⚖️ Yet, many women still need 3rd-party consent for basic healthcare
This #IWD2026, join @UNFPASierraleon to demand accessible, survivor-centered legal systems.
Rights without justice are just promises.

Anddd...it was a pleasure and honor to both participate in and serve as a facilitator at the Women's Dialogue convened by the Honorable Vice-President Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh and the Ministry of Gender and Children's Affairs.
Throughout his keynote address, our VP talked about "women's agency" and my feminist heart was surely happy about that.
Thank you VP and Minister Dr. Isata Mahoi, with special kudos to the team of Dr Yakama Manty Jones and Binta Jalloh.

The Office of the Honourable Vice President and @mogca_S_L convened a national dialogue bringing together government, partners, and women leaders to shape priorities for the upcoming National Women’s Conference and advance women’s leadership, agency, and inclusion in Sierra Leone
Today, we celebrate the resilience, dedication, and hard work of women across our nation. Their strength and contributions highlight the vital role women play in national development and in shaping the future of our society.
