A great critic--one of the greatest of his time. Had the pleasure of attending a Mets game with him some years back. He got mad when I criticized Thomas Jefferson. Still think I was right.
@jasongay@WSJ@andrewlbeaton@bzcohen Worked around the corner at LaMama in 1980. Only heard it called Phoebe’s then and ever since. (We stored our production dry ice in their freezer.)
@jasongay@WSJ@andrewlbeaton@bzcohen I’ve been going since early 1970s. The theater folks who hung out at the bar always called it Phoe-be’s like the Shakespeare character in “As You Like It.”
Looks like the argument is generational now. Ah well indeed.
Archbishop Desmond Tutu was a mentor, a friend, and a moral compass for me and so many others. A universal spirit, Archbishop Tutu was grounded in the struggle for liberation and justice in his own country, but also concerned with injustice everywhere.

Yes! We must investigate the security breach at the Capitol today. I warned our Caucus and had an hour long conversation with the Chief of Police 4days ago. He assured me the terrorists would not be allowed on the plaza & Capitol secured. What the hell?
Let me be very clear: the scenes of chaos at the Capitol do not represent who we are. What we are seeing is a small number of extremists dedicated to lawlessness. This is not dissent, it's disorder. It borders on sedition, and it must end. Now.
Words have consequences, especially the words of a president and his allies. Today those consequences include violent rioters attacking our Capitol to overthrow the American democratic process. This must end, and democracy must prevail.
