Why motion design MVs aren't cheap (and shouldn't be)

1) CUSTOMER EXPECTATION
Most motion designers just understand...that a good chunk of you...have NOT hired a motion designer before. We expect to explain a lot on what is possible, and what we can try. The communication takes a really long time and are easily longer than most consultation situations just cause...people don't know what to expect from our job! And that's okay. Our job requires patience...especially to After Effects

2) SCENE BUILDING
When people consider motion design, they think of the fast pace motions and moving text. What people forget is that the scene itself needs to be made. Here's an example of the layer setup for ONE scene.
- BG
- ground layer (optional)
- stuff behind the character
- character
- stuff in front of the character
- wind/particles/etc
- extra effects & colour grading
...and expect there to be layers/effect in between to get every layer you just put in to blend. This process takes almost the longest and the more complex the video should be...the more scenes that need to be added.

3) LAYERS
if you see screenshots of projects with over 500 layers in 1 video...that's normal. For a lot of motion designers, we easily expect these videos to at least have more than 100 layers. Some videos will hit over 2k layers and that's just normal.

4) TEXT
Text in after effects isn't always easy. Even in graphic design, you need to add gradients, drop shadows, effects, stroke...etc. In motion design, you not only have to consider the motion in the text, but also how it will look when the angle/placement will be different overtime (cause moving video). Not to mention that not every text transition can be done via "text layers" sometimes, we need to split the words into their own layers. and sometimes...we need to put them into shape layers (where we can't change what the text says unless we redo the entire section of text)

5) VIDEOS ARE LONG
Music videos tend to be either 1 min and 30 seconds...or 10 minutes. they aren't short and keeping people interested for more than 30 seconds is hard (staring at you YT shorts). We have to make instrumental breaks feel okay to sit through, we have to make the chorus feel like an experience. We can't just expect people to skip to the best parts either. And if you can't figure out how to make an instrumental break animation...imagine doing that as your full time job.

5) AFTER EFFECTS ITSELF IS A HEAVY PROGRAM
After Effects can do a LOT. It has probably the most flexibility out of any motion design program. However...it isn't optimized with the GPU...AE is heavily a CPU & RAM program...and you need a lot. Motion designers are recommended to have at least 32 GB of ram and even top of the line rigs will still lag. IT LAGS...So just like a mixer- we will hear your voice again and again- sometimes in SLOW MOTION.

6) RENDERING
Rendering in AE is a slog. you are rendering essentially new motions and pixels...so expect that render to take HOURS. Even on a top of a line PC, it is rare for a 5 min complex video to render in under 8 hrs. If the PC isn't that great...expect needing that video to render for longer than 8-16 hrs.

7) THE COST
Adobe suites is one thing...but some of the plugins and effects can cost over $200+...and some have subscriptions competing with Adobe's prices. Even if we want other alternatives for AE...they either don't have enough options in the program...or we cough up over $3k on some of these alternatives. This program doesn't come cheap.
