Stargate Trivia: Scorched Earth (The Gadmeer)

After landing on SG-1 for its fourth season, one of the first requests that came my way was for a list of alien race names. Apparently, after the whole pel'tac-tel'tak debacle, Robert C. Cooper had had his naming privileges revoked so it fell on me to come up with some. I remember generating a list. One, the Genii, would be used years later on Atlantis. Another, the Gadmeer, were used in our Scorched Earth (note: the race was unnamed in the first draft).

Here is some concept art from the episode: Lotan's ship and, of course, a Gadmeer who never actually/sadly made an appearance. He was so adorably comical-looking that I nicknamed him Monty and imagined an entire scenario where he joined SG-1 as a fifth member of the team, always bringing up the rear or distracted by flavor profiles of the various alien surfaces and artifacts he would like. I also did a perfected a pretty good Monty imitation: "Grrrklllbrrrpplllgghaaaakyook!"

Stargate Trivia: Wormhole X-Treme - chock full o' Easter Eggs

This meta-episode was loaded with them, from the red spray-painted kiwis mentioned at one point (a dig at Director Peter DeLuise who insisted on doing just that in Beneath the Surface) to then President of MGM Television Hank Cohen’s cameo as a studio executive who suggests “You know what this show needs is a sexy female alien.” (art imitating life in the case of season 4's Anise). There’s our faux t.v. hero trying to negotiate a veritable minefield of corpses (a call back to The Fifth Man), someone ridiculing the "one shot stuns, two shots kills, three shots disintegrates" abilities of the alien weapon (Hello, zat guns), further ridiculing of doing an episode involving “out of phase” physics (we did plenty), another character’s assertion that they’ll surely win an Emmy…for visual effects (the best any sci-fi show can hope for), and much, much more.

One scene that ended up on the cutting room floor involved the character of Teal’c. SG-1 and Hammond are watching the Wormhole Xtreme trailer at which point we do a PAN OFF the screen, across the briefing room table to Teal’c laughing uproariously and enjoying the hell out of the show – much to the bewilderment of his fellow team members. The outtake for this particular shot is one of my absolute favorites - a giddy laughed-out Chris Judge trying to hold it together.
