You may hate Elon Musk but he's doing tremendous basic research. In the past NASA did basic research (Computer chips, GPS, even TANG), that ending up benefiting humankind. Now, with Starship, Spacex has taken the basic research mantle.

What they're doing with reusability, materials science (especially shielding), Methalox, their use of stainless steel, rapid iteration... all that is fundamental and basic research that NASA should have been doing all along. It WILL profit humankind, eventually. But in the short term it's going to profit Spacex and Elon.

Liberals and NASA will probably groan and moan, but they made their non-choice.
