1982 hostage crisis
In 1982, seven white inmates took guards hostage at knifepoint, stole their guns, and opened fire on four Black inmates in their cells. Two of the Black inmates were killed, and the other two survived by hiding behind mattresses.

The green monster
The prison kitchen made a dish called the green monster by steaming okra and turnip greens until they became a green slime. The dish was served cold and without seasoning. When an inmate who worked in the kitchen added salt to the dish, he was punished by being sent to the hole for 30 days.

Some say that Brushy Mountain is one of the most haunted locations in the country. Some visitors have been scared of what they might encounter and have questioned why they came.

Death and disease
While there was no death row at Brushy Mountain, many prisoners died from diseases like syphilis, tuberculosis, typhoid fever, and pneumonia. Prisoners were also routinely beaten for "underproducing" in the mines.

Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary was Tennessee's first maximum-security prison and held the state's most violent criminals for over a century.
