BREAKING HERE: PM VISITING LAC

In his second visit to LAC in Ladakh after a bloody clash between the Chinese and the Indian border soldiers— in which 20 personnel from the Indian side got killed and an equal number of the Chinese troops also died as per reports but no firearm were used in Ladakh’s Galwan belt on 15 June 2020— Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to visit the village Chumur and inaugurate the Vibrant Villages Programme there in a few days this month.

PM Modi had visited the forward village of Nimu without any announcement on 3 July 2020. Nimu sits at an altitude of 11,000 ft while Chumur is situated as a staggering altitude of 16,700 ft above sea level. Modi also visited Drass and Leh on 26 July 2024 but did not go to the LAC.

Early this year, Government of the Union Territory of Ladakh with support of the Government of India launched multiple works under Vibrant Villages Programme at Chumur, a hamlet of 24 households and 91 residents, known for Pashmina goat rearing and wool production close to the LAC. It is Ladakh’s first Model Border Village and a part of the Korzok-Hanle Tourism Circuit.

The project marks a new chapter in Ladakh’s development journey and aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of strong and self-reliant border villages. Beginning with Chumur, ten border villages will be developed as Model Border Villages in the first phase of the Vibrant Village Programme.

The project, the first of its kind in Ladakh and among the pioneering model border village initiatives in India, is built around four key pillars: infrastructure development, employment and livelihood generation, all-weather functionality, and civil-defence integration. It aims to transform Chumur into a self-reliant, climate-resilient, tourism-enabled, and economically vibrant border settlement. Beginning with Chumur, ten border villages will be developed as Model Border Villages in the first phase of the Vibrant Village Programme.

Under the programme, families will be provided climate-resilient, south-facing passive solar houses designed to maximise solar heat gain and protect residents from harsh winters, when temperatures can fall to as low as minus 35 degrees Celsius. Each household will receive a residential unit with an attached bathroom, an additional room suitable for homestay activities, a kitchen garden space, livestock sheds, and dedicated fodder storage facilities.

#WATCH | Balasore, Odisha | Five baby orangutans, two females and three males, all under one year old, were found in the Ranakatha Protected Reserve Forest (PRF) near Badapai village, which is not their natural habitat.

According to Balasore DFO Indalkar Pratik Prakash, "While smuggling remains a possibility, there is no conclusive evidence yet.
