Socio-economic background plays a bigger role in students’ future academic plans than their ability.
High-performing disadvantaged students are less likely to think they will finish university than their more advantaged, low-performing peers.

This is all part of a very sad trend where books are read for purely pragmatic reasons (how can I become a more successful person?), and university studies are undertaken to get a good job.
