There is a particular kind of American that we Europeans were raised on, a man with a jaw like a filing cabinet who speaks quietly because he has never once needed to raise his voice, and on Monday in Warsaw one of them actually turned up. Gen. Alexus Grynkewich, NATO's top commander, explained that a Russian attack would be futile, and he did it with the mild patience of someone telling a toddler that the oven is hot.

His theory of victory, which all 32 allies back, is that NATO will destroy "anything and everything" keeping an attacking force alive, with land forces rushing to the breach while aircraft, ships, space and cyber units dismantle whatever sits behind it. War, he added, is neither imminent nor inevitable, and he said this only weeks after Moscow waved its nuclear arsenal about over Kaliningrad.

It was glorious, and it was also deeply embarrassing for the failed Trump regime, whose parade of beta males has spent years stamping its little feet, threatening its friends and flattering its enemies in the belief that this is what strength looks like.

Then a proper American walks into a room in Warsaw, speaks for a few minutes without shouting at anyone, and the whole lot of them are revealed as what they always were, which is frightened little men in oversized suits playing soldiers while the grown-ups get on with defending the continent.

Twintig jaar later: geen spijt, alleen dankbaarheid voor de gekregen kans.

Exact twintig jaar geleden veranderde mijn leven. Mijn ouders gaven me één kans om te studeren, maar ik heb die kans verwaarloosd. Na slechte eerste examens, mede omdat de roep van de studentenclub en het uitgaansleven te luid was, was ik verplicht om te gaan werken.

Al snel besloot ik een andere droom na te jagen: proberen binnen te geraken in het leger.
"Proberen" omdat er in die tijd véél méér kandidaten dan plaatsen waren, en niemand achtte mij er in staat toe.

Exact twintig jaar geleden kwam ik dus toe in mijn opleidingsschool, en sindsdien ben ik elke dag dankbaar voor de gekregen kans. Ik heb dingen gezien, dingen meegemaakt, zaken geleerd, en nog zoveel meer dan ik ooit voor mogelijk had gehouden. Mijn meerdere buitenlandse operaties hebben mij ook ruimere inzichten gegeven en vooral doen beseffen hoe verwend wij hier zijn als Belgen.

Regelmatig reflecteer ik over mijn leven, en keer op keer kom ik tot dezelfde conclusie: ik zou mijn levenskeuze niet willen veranderen. Militair zijn is voor mij een zeer eervolle levenswijze, en de bijdrage die ik kon en nog kan leveren aan de maatschappij is mijn motivatie.

Ja, Defensie is niet perfect. Ik zou zelfs durven stellen dat er veel fout loopt… en dat Defensie nog belangrijke evoluties moet doormaken, wars van de verschillende machten en belangen. Maar het positieve weegt ruimschoots op tegen het negatieve.

Heb je zelf altijd getwijfeld om militair te worden? Gewoon doen.
Er zijn genoeg keyboardwarriors...(zoals je elke dag ziet hier op X) maar als je echt iets wil bijdragen, dan weet je wat te doen.
En ja voor sommigen zal het niet zijn wat ze zochten... maar misschien ligt die levenswijze u net wél.

Exactly three years ago, our volunteers were confronted with emerging information and the first footage coming out of Israel and the border with Gaza. Although it took Western media more than a week to grasp the full scale of what happened on 7 October, our volunteers quickly realised that something horrific was unfolding.

While Israel initially provided very little communication about the attacks, Hamas propaganda was operating at full capacity. Many Western audiences encountered the conflict only when the IDF began bombing Gaza, without fully understanding why. This highlights a crucial lesson governments should draw from the conflict: do not allow your adversary to dominate the information environment.

While accounts such as Syrian Girl, WarMonitor (Suspended by X in May 2024), along with many others, downplayed Hamas’s role and focused, sometimes through the spread of disinformation, on the IDF, it became increasingly clear to our volunteers what had happened: This was the deadliest terrorist attack in Israel’s history.

Even today, media outlets often refer to it simply as a “Hamas attack,” but it was far larger than Hamas alone. We identified several militant groups, most of which are designated as terrorist organisations by the European Union. The groups involved included the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, Hamas’s military wing; the Al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades; the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP); the Abu Ali Mustafa Brigades; the Al-Quds Brigades, the military wing of Palestinian Islamic Jihad; the Palestinian Mujahideen Movement; the Mujahideen Brigades; Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ); and others.

GeoConfirmed’s footage made clear that these groups operated in their own designated areas. Journalists who attribute the attacks solely to Hamas do not tell the full story.

Our team has analysed more than 100,000 videos and other pieces of footage from various conflicts, and some of the most disturbing material we have encountered was recorded during the 7 October attacks.
