Proud Michigander. Go Green, Go White, I’m here to fight. “The old world is dying and the new world struggles to be born: now is the time of monsters.”
@emollick Portman knew how to make a damn fine atrium. His work for Hyatt was fantastic, but I’d also argue that there are some gems in some of his other projects, such as the triplets of the Renaissance Center (Detroit), Westin Bonaventure (LA), and Westin Peachtree Plaza (Atlanta).
The default size of a fire truck the U.S. is entirely based on the personal preferences of firefighters & their love of big trucks.
The rest of the world designed the trucks to meet the city. In the U.S. we designed our cities to meet the expanding trucks.
In return we got the following:
-no superior outcomes in fire deaths
-more road injuries and deaths
-less space for people and housing
-more expense
-less enjoyable cities
had never thought of this before, rent control drives down the value of multifamily units, reducing the property tax take, thus increasing the burden on owner-occupied homes
I closely follow Russian elections (because I have brain damage), and they do seem to start rigging at the tail end of elections. UR tries to win every FPTP district and they usually don't realize they fucked up till pretty late in the process.
Actually cannot believe this is a real New York Times story.
Apparently debt collectors are having a tough time financially right now — because many of them are being called by other debt collectors.
If you immediately know who I’m referring to when I say “Peruvian Japanese faildaughter girlboss Hitler,” that’s great but it’s important to understand your intuitions about the average voter are worthless.
It always feels like the 2 types of reactions foreigners have to America is that everything is terrible or they start cursing God they weren't born in Naperville Illinois.
Why our politics have gotten stupider since the 1990s.
To be "into politics" back then you basically needed to engage with serious journalism or books from major publishers.
That world is gone. Now, no matter how stupid you are, there is content that carters to you.
@HicksCBER@mickey_d682 I’m not giving an indictment of the system, I’m simply stating that it exists (and that it’s a good thing as it’s doing the role of “talent scouting” rural areas). I agree that people leave rural areas for opportunity, GATE programs simply make rural brain drain more efficient.
@mickey_d682@HicksCBER Our education system has been designed to move talent up & out of rural areas. The problem we’re seeing now is that there is little talent left to tap. They’re desolate because talented people have been leaving for generations (like my grandparents w/ their Northern MI hometown).
unless you grew up in one of the handful of talent agglomeration zones in this country, it's likely that the influential adults who ran your public school system saw it as their job to launch gifted kids on trajectories with enough exit velocity to leave their communities behind
The year is 2076. After 467 presidents in the past 60 years, a 101-year old Keiko Fujimori wins the presidency by one (1) vote. She dies the day after taking office.
I feel like one of the last genuinely fun Twitter activities is rubbernecking car-accident level bad posts by autistic, emotionally imbalanced right-wingers who insist that they're smol sensitive beans even as they advocate for genocide.
