November 2024 was not a normal presidential election. It was something closer to a national suicide pact. Seventy seven million Americans walked into a voting booth and chose to hand power back to a man who had already failed in the office once and who attempted to overturn the will of the voters through mob violence.
What makes that decision so difficult to understand is that there was never a serious governing case for his return to power. Instead, the justification came through a series of grievances and cultural anxieties that were elevated far beyond their reality.
Criminal immigrant hordes, trans people harming children, DEI supposedly taking jobs from white workers, even the price of eggs. A patchwork of fears and frustrations that were used to rationalize a choice that otherwise made little sense.
Voters were not choosing an unknown figure. They had already seen the chaos of the first administration and the willingness to undermine democratic institutions when the outcome of an election did not go his way. They heard the rhetoric that treated the presidency less as a constitutional office and more as a personal instrument of power.
Yet, a plurality of the electorate chose him anyway. That decision will shape the country for years to come, and the consequences of it are only beginning to unfold. We still have essentially three more years of this. I'm not sure the amount of damage that will occur in that time will ever be something we can come back from.
@AbbadonLive@AirCanada@CTA_gc Oh right! I knew it was something like that, so they robbed you of work and pay and are now trying to charge you for that too?? Wtf AirCanada??
