Her name is Claire Mazumdar.

She is 37 years old. Her parents are both computer science professors in the United States. Her brother Eric is a professor at the California Institute of Technology and an AI expert.

She holds a degree in Biological Engineering from MIT and both an MBA and a PhD in cancer biology from Stanford.

She founded Bicara Therapeutics in 2018. A clinical stage cancer therapy company focused on bi specific antibodies. She led it to a Nasdaq listing in 2024. She also sits on the boards of Relay Therapeutics and Noora Health.

She is the niece of Kiran Mazumdar Shaw. The woman who founded Biocon in 1978 in a garage in Bengaluru with Rs 10000 and built it into India’s largest biotechnology company over four decades.

Kiran Mazumdar Shaw has no children.

Today she named Claire as her successor to lead Biocon into its next phase.

Kiran said I am the sole owner of Biocon and I need to make sure that I put it in good hands. I have seen my niece Claire as my successor because I think she has proved to me that she can run a company.

Biocon was built by one woman over four decades. It will now be led by another.

In 1974 Sudha Murthy applied for a job at TELCO.

She was an engineer from BVB College of Engineering Hubli.

She found an advertisement that said TELCO was not hiring women.

She wrote a postcard to JRD Tata directly.

She wrote that this was unfair.

JRD Tata read it personally.

He called her for an interview.

She was hired.

She became the first woman engineer at TELCO.

7 years later in 1981 her husband Narayana Murthy asked her for Rs 10,000.

She gave it to him.

That Rs 10,000 became Infosys.

A postcard to JRD Tata.

Rs 10,000 to her husband.

Two decisions that changed Indian business forever.

Her name is Sudha Murthy.

She made both of them.

His name is K Annamalai.

He cracked IPS in 2011 with AIR 25.

He was posted in Karnataka.

In 2020 he arrested a sitting MLA’s son for a land grab case.

Within weeks he was transferred.

He resigned from IPS the same year.

He was 32 years old.

He said he could not serve the people inside a system that protected the powerful.

He walked away from a guaranteed career.

A pension. A salary. A uniform.

Because keeping them meant giving up the reason he wore the uniform.

Today he is in politics.

Whether that worked out is a different debate.

But the moment he resigned from IPS to fight the system from outside.

That moment was real.

India keeps producing men like him.

The system keeps making them choose.
