Not sure who needs to hear this but.... no amount of money, community program or job can replace the the the Indigenous rights, lives, connections to land, culture, languages and ceremonies that will be lost as a result of coal development in the Eastern Slopes🏔 🌱 🦅
Yes, #GrassyMountain was rejected, but it was never just one coal mine.
Let’s also hope that Benga is forced to clean and restore lands that they desecrated during coal exploration.
#NoCoalMinesOnNiitsitapiLand
When I read statements like “First Nations communities in Alberta” it is misleading. Nations are not communities, nor are they “in the provinces.” Provinces were created after our Nations. The Provinces are in our Nations’ Territories. This Truth is necessary for Reconciliation.
The Government of Canada decided the #GrassyMountain Coal Project is likely to have significant adverse environmental effects that cannot be justified and the project cannot proceed. Find out more by reading the Minister’s Decision Statement:

On this #HeritageDay I hope Canadians reflect on Canada’s real heritage of dispossession, oppression and genocide for unfettered access to Indigenous people’s land and resources that still reverberates and is ongoing to this very day.

The frank slide disaster should be a constant reminder of the dangers of not listening to first nations when providing warnings about over extraction.

In fact all land pictured is unsurrendered Indigenous land.

Did you know that the Government of Alberta, without public consultation, just privatized the forest management of over 3,500 km2 of public land in southwest Alberta, including in the Livingstone and Porcupine Hills? Read more here: https://t.co/5MgUIBf2UO
No amount of money can replace or restore the Oldman Watershed and the spiritual integrity of the land.
Y’all forget that tribal governments don’t speak for the land. We will keep speaking up until the Oldman watershed is safe and protected 💙 https://t.co/rPR46L5bBx
Is it a coincidence that widespread understanding of what the climate crisis has in store for us is lining up with a moment of national reckoning about what Canada really is?
Given the deep connection between colonialism and the climate crisis, this feels like a moment.
Destroying the Eastern Slopes and Oldman Watershed is a hateful act of colonial violence.
These lands hold Niitsitapi creation stories, language, culture & life.
A church can be rebuilt… sacred lands, water and children can not be 🏔
I visited the burned-out remains of the Saint-Jean-Baptiste Church in Morinville to express my sorrow and solidarity with the local community, Franco-Albertans, and Catholics across the province.
We must all reject hateful acts of violence whenever and wherever they occur.
