The New York Times published a video investigation that delves into a series of horrifying events that occurred in early December. Investigations of this kind are rare due to the lack of sufficient footage and the difficulty in investigating the sheer number of similar incidents.

Details:

On December 5, the Israeli army completed its control of the Indonesian Hospital in Beit Lahia. The following morning, a boy from the Abu Saleh family left a nearby school that had been turned into a shelter for displaced people, where he and his family were staying. He stepped outside to see what remained after the bulldozers had left. An Israeli army sniper shot him in the heart. The family heard the gunfire and found him.

As the boy lay dying, the family prepared for his burial. The father, mother, and four other children carried his body on a stretcher and made their way to the cemetery, holding a white flag. After the burial, they returned to the school. Just 200 meters from the school, while still holding the white flag and the empty stretcher, an Israeli sniper shot and killed them all.

Video footage shows the bodies huddled on the ground, possibly trying to shield each other from gunfire. One family member—the daughter and sister—survived because she hadn’t gone with them to the burial. She was unaware of her family’s fate due to a lack of phone coverage. The next day, the Israeli army began evacuating people from the area. The daughter then encountered the bodies of her six family members on the road.

She was in shock. The Israeli army did not allow her or her relatives to bury the bodies. Weeks later, after the Israeli forces withdrew from the area, residents searching through the remaining debris found the remains of the family. Israeli bulldozers had buried them along with the rubble and waste.
