Yesterday, Class XII results were out. So many kids with 90% plus in family and friends. One friend shared his daughter got into Harvard for engineering.
I’m proud. Truly happy for them.
But later that day, a quiet thought crept in…
Came across a couple of young working professionals who could not go home for Deepavali because
1) Train tickets not confirmed
2) Flight ticket prices over the roof
To one of them who I know orders food almost everyday, I gently said she could recover the flight ticket if she cooked food half the time. The question she asked me back was something which we as society needs to ponder. I will try summarizing her rant in my own words.
"Why did I study like crazy all through my high school and college to undergo same struggle as my parents akka? Cook everyday, travel by bus, face traffic everyday, buy dresses on discounts, prefer unbranded stuff to save money..... Everyone tells me this now. And while studying all elders promised me the moon about lifestyle. Now I feel cheated of my adolescent years and forced into some corporate bonded labour! Same struggle in glass buildings!"
I was all fired up to unsheath the Purushartha framework but thought the time was not right and it was best to lend a listening ear for the moment.
While acknowledging all the millennial impetuousness she showed, I felt we overglorified a corporate career to generation after generation, shook their teen years, uprooted them from their roots. This happened to a point that a large section of young population think those glass buildings are more respectable than being a part of family trade, SMEs and localpreneurship.
The same urban young gets exploited right from dishonest autowallas, PG owners and every other person they transact with. Then we blame these kids for raising the living costs in cities and
are now lecturing them to be prudent.
Our way of shaping younger aspirations needs a huge shift. Our way of creating value and employment needs to stop anchoring on Metro cities. Here's where I have a deep respect for @svembu. Thanks to him, at least some employees of one company arent away from their families.
But this change is needed at a much ramped up level. What all and what more can be done is the question.
Wanting to support her father, who is a marathon runner, the little girl held his hand in the final stages of the race and ran with him to the finish line.

The most controversial Prime Minister of India in last 50 years. Ruled for less than a year but changed Indian politics forever.
V.P. Singh was last official head of Manda Zamindari state in Uttar Pradesh. He was always called Raja Manda by people and other leaders.
In 1980s, he was CM of UP and under him law & administration conditions improved in UP. He made Phoolan Devi surrender too. Had a respect among everyone.

Lots of comparison around why a country with billion people doesn’t have enough representation and winners in Olympics. Back in 2014, when we used to be a motorcycle rental company, I met 2 folks from new Zealand showing up at our office in Jayanagar. They wanted to rent 2 enfields for 1 month long. I ended up spending time with them all the way till Jog and then Hampi since we had one Enfield and a friend had promised to buy one in Shimoga and put it on rev share. Anyways long story short, these two 6 feet plus folks were 20 years old and were travelling for an indefinite period.
One of them told me he sold everything he had and did this trip. I asked him what will he do once back, he said I don’t have to worry much, I will figure out because healthcare is taken care of. Even today I see his posts and he is sailing around the world.
When you don’t have to worry about certain basic things being take care of like medi care and also unemployment support etc., the way you think is super different. It’s not that Indians are weak or not capable. They have other things to worry about most of the times.
So, we need a long time from now to create athletes ! Unless government supports athletes with healthy stipends and incentives. Let’s be honest, we all grew up wanting to get a job and start earning so that we get better access to things.

A few hours ago, IAS results were declared in India.
Many dreams were shattered, and a few ‘lives' were made. Indian Media will focus on the latter, not the former.
If you failed the exam or are stressed about the upcoming prelims. Here’s some practical advice that your UPSC coaching centers will never give you.
Life isn’t a zero-sum game.
1. Do NOT drop another year: Out of 1 million who appear for UPSC only around 80 become IAS officers.
For no fault of yours, UPSC is a game of luck - after a point in time. It is a travesty that many Indians are wasting the most productive years of their lives by appearing/reappearing for such exams mindlessly (without any backup plan).
2. There are many ways to contribute to society: If Sunder Pichai had cleared #UPSC - he would be working as a collector in Greater Noida today.
Large scale impact he has created or continues to create is insurmountable to one he could have created while being in the IAS. ❤️
There are great organizations such as FSG, Bridgespan, Dalberg, and BCG doing incredible work in collaboration with the Government of India, and a few state governments.
3. Build Skills: India has changed. We aren’t a 20th-century economy anymore. With the advent of liberalization and the Internet economy - the state control of power shifted from civil servants to specialized professionals.
Former JS of Civil Aviation is an #MBA from IIM A and was a partner at KPMG.
One of the OSDs in the Prime Minister’s office never even appeared for the civil services exam - and started his career as an Intern. There are 100 others like them who are laterally hired and contributing immensely through their work. And this trend will continue to increase.
Don’t let an exam dictate the trajectory of your 20s. The 20s are the most productive years of your lives, and the opportunity cost of revising the UPSC syllabus every year is infinite.
For those who cleared the exam, congratulations! More power to you, your journey has just begun! And for those who couldn’t - write to me. We can plan something better together!
