Three decisions which have left everyone at #Medtwitter India disappointed in recent past have been
1) 0 percentile qualification in last #neetpg , there should be some cutoff in any competitive exam to maintain sanctity of the process
2) 3 year internship for #fmg even after passing #fmge for online classes during covid , while at that time everything was online
3) extraordinary number of students getting 100% marks in #neet #neetug reflecting the need to relook at the exam process and test paper levels

Hope the issues are solved and looked at pragmatically and with consideration towards all stakeholders

Indian Medical Education system is totally collapsed. There is an urgent need for reforms in the medical education sector.

During inspection by NMC it was found that around 80% of colleges are not following rules set by NMC and have been found to be defaulters in terms of poor infrastructure, absence of faculties during teaching hours not putting their attendance on the system, equipment, deficiency in clinical material and non-compliance of minimum standards of requirements including number of classrooms required for 100 students.

Over 500 colleges have been found to be defaulters and inspection is ongoing. NMC have started putting monetary fine on the colleges. This is for both government & private colleges.

What is the use of giving cutthroat NEET examination and then studying in colleges which doesn’t have proper infrastructure?

What is the use of opening medical colleges if they cannot be maintained properly?

Urgent : Call for Equitable Treatment of Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs)

The latest directive from #UGMEB @NMC_IND represents a severe blow to thousands of Foreign Medical Graduates #FMGs .This is a matter of urgent concern that threatens to dismantle the hard-earned careers of many dedicated individuals.

In response to the UGMEB’s recent circular (No. U.15024/01/2022-UGMEB dated 9th May 2023) and the public notice issued on December 7th, 2023, we seek to address the implications of the new guidelines for Foreign Medical Graduates #FMGs .

Key Points of Concern:

1.Rejection of Blended Learning Certificates:
•The UGMEB’s decision to reject certificates from FMGs who completed online theory classes supplemented with offline practical training, as mentioned in clause (x) of point 3 of the circular, overlooks the legitimacy and necessity of such educational arrangements during unprecedented times.
•We believe that this measure does not adequately reflect the reality faced by many FMGs, who had no option but to adapt to online learning modes due to global disruptions, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. This adaptation was not only lawful but essential to ensure continuity in their education.

2.Extended Internship Requirements:
•The requirement for FMGs to undergo a Compulsory Rotating Medical Internship (CRMI) for a period of two to three years (repeating a 12-month schedule) is disproportionately burdensome. This far exceeds the standard internship duration and imposes an excessive delay on the professional progression of FMGs.

•This policy appears to be inconsistent with the principle of proportionality and fairness, as it places an undue hardship on FMGs compared to their counterparts who completed their education within India under similar conditions.

Legal and Ethical Considerations:

•Equality and Non-Discrimination: According to Article 14 of the Indian Constitution, which guarantees equality before the law, FMGs should be treated equitably and without discrimination. The UGMEB’s stance on rejecting valid blended learning certificates and extending internship periods disproportionately affects FMGs.

•Legitimacy of Blended Learning: Educational institutions worldwide have adopted online learning during emergencies. Dismissing this mode of education without substantial grounds undermines the adaptive efforts made by FMGs and their institutions under extraordinary circumstances.

•Right to Profession: Article 19(1)(g) of the Indian Constitution provides the right to practice any profession. By imposing unreasonable barriers on FMGs, their ability to practice their chosen profession in a timely manner is being hindered, which could be seen as a violation of their rights.

Call for Fairness and Dialogue:

We urge the UGMEB @NMC_IND to reconsider and amend these guidelines to:

•Acknowledge Blended Learning: Recognize the validity of online theory classes supplemented with offline practical training for FMGs, as long as they meet the educational standards required.
•Reevaluate Internship Duration: Align the CRMI duration for FMGs with the standard internship period to ensure fair and equitable treatment.
•Engage in Dialogue: Establish a platform for constructive dialogue with #FMGs representatives to address their concerns and find mutually beneficial solutions.

Let’s Work Together for a Just and Equitable Medical Education System.

Call for Genuine Dialogue with Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs)

We are deeply concerned by the recent actions of the National Medical Commission @NMC_IND regarding the new policies affecting Foreign Medical Graduates #FMGs . Despite multiple attempts by #FMGs to engage in constructive dialogue about these policies, the doors have been closed to them, leaving many feeling unheard and marginalized.

Key Issues Highlighted:

1.Lack of Engagement with FMGs:
•When FMGs approached the NMC to discuss the recent circulars impacting their education and career pathways, they were met with a closed door. This lack of openness contradicts the NMC’s stated commitment to inclusivity and transparency.
•On other occasions, the NMC has publicly invited dialogue with medical professionals on various issues. The exclusion of FMGs from such conversations suggests a discrepancy in how different members of the medical community are treated.
2.The Need for Authentic Communication:
•Effective policymaking requires genuine engagement with all stakeholders. FMGs, who represent a significant portion of the medical workforce, deserve to have their voices heard and their concerns addressed in a fair and transparent manner.
•The perception that the NMC is avoiding meaningful dialogue with FMGs undermines trust and suggests a lack of willingness to address the real challenges faced by these dedicated professionals.

Our Stance:

We at @udfaindia believe that a body like the NMC, which is designed to represent and listen to the medical community, must be open to all its members. Ignoring or sidelining any group is counterproductive and contrary to the principles of equality and fairness.

Why This Matters:

•Equity and Representation: All medical professionals, regardless of where they received their education, should have the opportunity to engage with regulatory bodies and influence policies that affect their careers and lives.
•Transparency and Trust: For the NMC to maintain its credibility and legitimacy, it must foster an environment of openness and responsiveness, especially towards those who are most impacted by its decisions.
•Potential for Unrest: If the NMC continues to act unilaterally without genuine dialogue, it risks alienating a significant portion of the medical community. This could lead to increased discontent and potential protests, which is not in anyone’s interest.

Our Call to Action:

•Open the Doors to Dialogue: We urge the NMC to actively engage with FMGs and their representatives to discuss the implications of recent policies and seek mutually acceptable solutions.
•Demonstrate True Commitment: Show that the commitment to inclusivity and open dialogue is not just for show, but a fundamental principle guiding the NMC’s actions.
•Listen and Represent: The NMC must fulfill its mandate to listen to and represent all members of the medical community, including FMGs who have contributed significantly to healthcare in India.

Let’s Work Together for a Fair and Inclusive Medical Community.

We remain hopeful that the NMC will reconsider its approach and embrace a more inclusive and open stance towards FMGs. It is only through unity and collaboration that we can ensure a just and effective healthcare system for all.
