C'est le Canard enchaîné qui le révèle. La France est désormais 23e sur 27 pays dans l'Union européenne pour la mortalité infantile, avec un taux de 4,1 décès pour 1 000 naissances. Ce ne sont pas des chiffres abstraits. Ce sont des familles. Ce sont des berceaux vides. Ce sont des prénoms choisis pour des enfants qui n'ont pas vécu assez longtemps pour les porter.

Et pendant ce temps, quelqu'un dans un ministère avait ce rapport entre les mains et a décidé qu'il valait mieux ne pas le diffuser.

Un taux de 4,1 pour 1 000, pour donner un repère, c'est celui qu'on associe aux pays en voie de développement. La Slovénie, la Finlande, l'Estonie font mieux que nous. Des pays qu'on citait encore il y a vingt ans comme des exemples à construire nous ont dépassés sur la protection de ce qu'il y a de plus fragile : un enfant qui vient de naître.

La France se présente depuis des décennies comme un modèle de protection sociale. Un système de santé universel, une couverture maternité parmi les meilleures du monde, une tradition républicaine de soin public. Ces discours continuent. Les chiffres racontent une autre histoire.
