Our engagement further strengthened the long-standing collaboration between both agencies under the Federal Ministry of Interior, with a shared focus on enhancing identity verification, improving service delivery, and fortifying Nigeria’s border and security architecture.

I had the honor of participating in the United Nations High-Level Side Event on Building Thriving Digital Economies in Africa through Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), hosted by the Government of South Africa in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Gates Foundation, and Amazon Web Services (AWS).
As the Director-General/CEO of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), I joined distinguished leaders, including Hon. Mondli Gungubele, Deputy Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies of South Africa, alongside African Ministers, UN leaders, the AfCFTA Secretariat, Regional Economic Communities, development partners, and the private sector.
I was privileged to speak on the Continental Integration Panel: “Continental Integration Through Digital Trade”, where we engaged in forward-looking discussions on how Africa can accelerate inclusive growth by building citizen-centric digital public services, strengthening partnerships, and shaping global discourse with African perspectives at the forefront.
Together, we are laying the foundation for sustainable, people-driven digital economies across the continent.

DG NIMC EMPHASIZES THE IMPORTANCE OF NIN TO NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT AT THE 80TH UNGA
The National Identity Management Commission, Director-General/CEO of NIMC, Engr. (Dr) Abisoye Coker-Odusote has emphasised the significance of the National Identification Number (NIN) to national development.
Engr Coker-Odusote made the remark while representing the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu , GCFR , at the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) High-Level Event on Social Business, Youth, and Technology, convened by the Global Committee on Social Business for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The event was co-hosted alongside Prof. Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser to the interim government of Bangladesh, had other global dignitaries in attendance.
Engr. Coker-Odusote spoke extensively on the use cases of the unique identifier - National Identification Number. She emphasised the importance of the NIN to financial inclusion, access to services, inclusivity, and a host of other benefits.
The engagement provided a unique platform to shape global conversations on how innovation, youth empowerment, and technology can be harnessed to accelerate sustainable development, advance digital inclusion, and build trusted identity systems that leave no one behind.
Notable contributors at the engaging event included Nobel Laureate, Tawakkol Karman, who emphasized unity and peace, alongside UN delegates and directors committed to driving a more inclusive future.

As the Director-General/Chief Executive Officer of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), this engagement was particularly significant, as it provided an opportunity to contribute to global conversations on how innovation, youth empowerment, and technology can be harnessed to accelerate sustainable development, strengthen digital inclusion, and build trusted identity systems that leave no one behind.

Today, I joined the 1-day Stakeholder Engagement organized by the National Social Safety Nets Coordinating Office (NASSCO), where I highlighted the impact of our collaboration since February 2024. With NIN integration, 1000 enrolment devices deployed and SOCU teams trained nationwide, Together, NIMC, and NASSCO have strengthened the National Social Register for greater accuracy & reliability and bringing identity closer to every Nigerian.
Furthermore, NIMC is set to commence ward-level enrollment across the country, a key component of President Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda to strengthen the National Identity System.
NIMC DG/CEO, Engr. (Dr.) Abisoye Coker-Odusote emphasised that the Commission aims to work with strategic partners to enrol and issue NINs to all Nigerians and legal residents in every ward, ensuring no one is left out.
