Today, I led a delegation of leaders of our dear State of Bayelsa to the Presidential Villa in Abuja to formally appreciate the President, His Excellency, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, on the elevation and appointment of our daughter, Dame Didi Walson-Jack, to the esteemed position of Head of the Civil Service of the Federation.

During the visit, I equally acknowledged and appreciated the President for the appointment of other Bayelsans, including Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, Honourable Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Dr. Emomotimi Agama, Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission of Nigeria, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, Managing Director, Niger Delta Development Commission and Prince Ebitimi Amgbare, Chief Executive Officer & Managing Director, Niger Delta Basin Development Authority amongst others.

Accompanied by the appointees to the Villa, I told Mr. President
that these appointments have reinforced our sense of belonging and representation at the national level.

While I thanked the President on the commencement of the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway, I appealed to him to direct the completion of the East-West road, which has been under construction for many years.

I also seized the occasion to brief the president on the various strategic projects under the Prosperity Administration including ongoing construction of historic Nembe-Brass and Yenagoa-Oporoma-Ukubie roads. I have called for more support towards the completion of the projects.

I have equally extended an invitation to Mr. President to Bayelsa State to inaugurate the completed Sagbama-Ekeremor road and perform the flag-off for the new Ekeremor-Agge road which will connect us to the Atlantic Ocean and boost the Blue Economy.

During the visit, I reminded the President of the wrongful revocation of our State oil asset, Atala Oil Field OML46 by the previous administration and made a strong appeal to kindly direct the reallocation of the oil field back to Bayelsa.

I also formally presented copies of the report of the
Bayelsa State Oil & Environmental Commission titled: “An Environmental Genocide: Counting the Human and Environmental Cost of Oil in Bayelsa, Nigeria," to the President and sought his support in the implementation of the recommendations for remediation and reparation.

I felt very excited when Mr. President acknowledged the progress achieved so far under our government and for the peace being enjoyed in our dear State.

Yesterday, I paid a condolence visit to my friend and brother, Chief Hon Nigeria Kia, at his home to offer my sympathies following the untimely passing of his aunt, Mrs. Newyear Dickson , a loving sister and mother. Although it was a somber occasion, I acknowledged that we cannot question the will of God. I signed the condolence register and prayed for the repose of Mrs. Newyear's soul. As mortals, we all have a day to depart this earth. Chief Kia expressed his gratitude for my visit, and I look forward to attending a befitting burial ceremony for her.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

It is a profound honor to welcome you all to the 16th memorial edition of the Legacies and Times of Chief Medford Obiene Okilo, held here at the DSP Alamieyeseigha Memorial Banquet Hall in Ovom Yenagoa. Today, we gather not only to remember but to celebrate a visionary leader, statesman, and an unwavering pillar of our community, Chief Medford Obiene Okilo. His tenure as the first civilian Governor of old Rivers State and his service as a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria exemplify his commitment to the people and the nation.

Chief Okilo's legacy continues to resonate deeply within our hearts and our communities. His unparalleled contributions to the state's development have left an indelible mark on our history. His tenure saw remarkable achievements: the distribution of power plants, the canalization of rivers for free travel, the establishment of Rivers State University, his advocacy for the creation of the Niger Basin Authority, and the introduction of the derivation principle, which has evolved into the 13% revenue allocation that all Niger Delta states enjoy today.

Chief Okilo was not just a leader; he was a beacon of hope and progress. His vision and dedication to the people have paved the way for countless advancements that we benefit from today. His leadership style, marked by exceptional compassion and respect for authority, set a standard for governance that continues to inspire us all.

While I could elaborate further on his numerous accomplishments, I am confident that Ambassador Boladei Igali, who is intimately familiar with Chief Okilo's legacy, will provide deeper insights as our program progresses.

Our government remains steadfast in its commitment to celebrating and honoring Chief Okilo's legacy. We recognize his unwavering dedication to education and development, which continues to inspire us all. I commend Governor Diri for his steadfast support in commemorating the life and achievements of this iconic leader, whose impact on our state and our nation will never be forgotten.

Today, I received a delegation of Public Relations Officers from various security agencies in the state in my office. The delegation comprised representatives from the following agencies:

- Federal Road Safety Commission
- Nigeria Immigration Service
- Nigeria Correctional Service
- National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA)
- Federal Fire Service
- Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC)

Supol. Musa Mohammed, the Police Public Relations Officer, served as the spokesman for the delegation.

We discussed the importance of effective communication in preventing crises and maintaining public trust. The officers commended the state Governor, Senator Douye Diri for his consistent support and expressed their congratulations on my recent appointment.

The delegation emphasized the need for collaboration and information sharing between security agencies and the public to tackle criminal activities proactively. I urged the officers to perform their duties with diligence and in accordance with the law, and I encouraged the public to cooperate with security agencies by reporting suspicious activities.

This meeting highlights the significance of communication in governance and our commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of our people.

Earlier today, I had the pleasure of receiving the Niger Delta West Anglican Communion, Women Conference Committee, led by Dame Joan Inaigo Ogu, in my office. The purpose of their visit was to congratulate me on my appointment as Secretary to the State Government and to inform me of their upcoming Diocesan Conference, scheduled to take place from July 12th to 14th, 2024, in Yenagoa.

During our meeting, the committee commended His Excellency, Senator Douye Diri, the Governor of Bayelsa State, for his support and inclusion of women in his cabinet. They also offered prayers for peace in the state.

We had a fruitful discussion, and I assured them of my support for their conference, both leading up to and during the event. I look forward to continuing to work with the committee to ensure the success of their conference.

This morning, I received a courtesy visit from the leadership and structural political bodies of Southern Ijaw extraction the (Confab), led by Deacon Robert Igali JP, in my office. They congratulated me on my appointment and commended His Excellency, Senator Douye Diri, the Executive Governor of Bayelsa State, for appointing youths to various executive positions.

The delegation of youths acknowledged the impact of the Diri-led administration on the lives of Southern Ijaw people and urged him to continue his good work. We had a productive discussion and exchange of ideas on how to advance Southern Ijaw in all aspects of life, transcending our political affiliations. I assured them that my doors are open to young people with innovative ideas for growth and development.

The visit culminated in the presentation of a portrait to my office and person as a mark of respect.

It was a touching moment when I received representatives from the Angiama community in the Southern Ijaw Local Government Area at my office. Led by the Deputy Paramount Ruler, His Royal Highness S. N. Biobele, the delegation included the Community Development Chairman, Youth President, and other chiefs in council.

They congratulated the state Governor, His Excellency Senator Douye Diri, on his victory in the 2023 gubernatorial elections. They also commended the Governor for appointing me as Secretary to the State Government, recognizing me as an illustrious son of Southern Ijaw.

During the visit, they highlighted certain challenges the Angiama community is facing, particularly the need to build a befitting school for the community. They praised the Governor for constructing a road to their community, which has now become a transit point to other communities in the area, boosting local business.

The delegation also appealed for appointments for the sons and daughters of the community who worked tirelessly for the Governor's victory, especially those from Ward 2. I reminded them that Angiama is a great community with many potential and educated personalities. The fact that two individuals from their community have previously held the position I currently occupy is a testament to their greatness.

I advised the chiefs to always guide the youth to shun violence and embrace peace. Acknowledging our Governor's dedication to education, I promised to liaise with the Commissioner of Education to obtain more details about the school building project approved by His Excellency.
