Meet Ghulam Shakir
Resident of Karachi’s Shireen Jinnah Colony
Profession: Walks from Shireen Jinnah Colony around 3-4 kms to a hospital where he helps people park cars - and some pay him some don’t - he’s not one of the parking mafia attendants (whom I never pay and they have stopped asking)
I saw him directing some cars to empty places in the service lane - which is public parking - but then so is parking behind the hospital bug there an organized charged parking gang is operating and charging Rs 50 per vehicle
So I parked my car and noticed that he wasn’t wearing any shoes or chappals
At first I thought he might be a beggar since he wasn’t wearing any footwear
So I asked him what his name was and he told me - he said his chappals had broken so he was barefoot
He told me he lived in Shireen Jinnah colony and came to this hospital every day trying to make some money by helping people with their car parking
He said he had children and all were grown and working as daily wage earners
He said he had to do what he was doing because there was no other way to feed himself and his wife and family (some of his children were still living with him)
He said on a good day he would earn Rs 800-900 in a day and that he had been doing this for 9 years
Before that he had a food stall and would sell chaat - but the ingredients became too expensive so he stopped
Ghulam Shakir said he’s originally from Peshawar and came to Karachi during the time of Bhutto (I didn’t ask him to specify but he meant Zulfikar Ali Bhutto)
I gave him whatever little cash I had on me and he broke down
He clearly could do with some financial assistance
I am collecting donations to pass on to him - alternatively people can go to the place in person and hand some assistance to him
If people are interested in helping him they can DM
(Note: the pics were taken with his permission and he knows they may be shared as part of an appeal to help him)
One of the most brutal scenes in human history has been leaked.
An Israeli soldier filmed this clip using a drone camera while proudly boasting about the destruction of all homes in Gaza.
A moment the world must never forget.
I am gravely concerned by reports of a severe deterioration in the condition of Dr. Abu Safiyah.
We reiterate our demands for his release, along with all other doctors being held without charge.
