This video genuinely helped me.
After weeks of getting no invites or direct messages on my new Upwork account, I watched it, applied the advice, and got an invite in less than 5 minutes.
If you're struggling to get traction on Upwork, it's worth watching.
Huge credit to @delightfjohnson for sharing this. Highly recommend giving it a watch.
I spent months figuring out how #HandshakeAI actually matches
people to projects.
Nobody explains it clearly.
Here's the full breakdown — profile setup, algorithm triggers, and
the one cheat code that changes everything. 🧵
First — how Handshake AI matching actually works:
2 / 9
HAI's team manually reviews applications and matches you
based on:
→ Project needs at that moment
→ Your qualifications & experience
→ Your domain expertise
→ Overall fit & performance history
It's NOT fully automated. A real human is looking at your profile.
Which means your profile has to look the part.
THE CHEAT CODE:
Upload your real professional CV.
Not a fake one. Not a keyword-stu!ed template.
HAI's team is matching you to AI lab partners. These are real
companies. They vet you properly.
A real CV with real experience wins every time.
Then you add AI skills on top. That's the combo.
use this CV as a refrence create something exactly like tailor to your profile ofc
A lot of your mentors are gatekeeping https://t.co/llNQnDFxj2

How to optimize your upwork profile. Quick summary of some of the best ways to do this 👇👇👇
Whenever a search is made, upwork looks at some of the things to show your profile for relevant search:
- title
- descriptions
- skill tags
- work experience (people fumble this)
- JSS
- Amount earned (Yes, it’s one of the tops of the funnel)
- location
As a newbie without reviews on upwork, we can’t control some of the above but we can surely control our title, descriptions, work experience
Let’s talk about the title:
Don’t just throw in random words. Upwork is a search engine for clients and titles matter a lot.
Here’s what to do:
✅ Go to Upwork and search for top freelancers in your niche.
✅ Study their titles. what patterns do you notice?
✅ Do they mention specific tools (like “Figma” or “Tableau”)?
✅ Do they highlight results (e.g. “conversion-focused”, “SEO-optimized”)?
✅ Do they include roles (e.g. “landing page designer”, “email copywriter”)?
A great title often combines all three:
Often times, this includes the software or tools used in that industry, the result/feeling of your client, or the skill itself. Figma designer (software use), landing page designer (what you do), or conversion optimized designer (what your client is looking for). Combine this and you have an optimized profile
Now, match those keywords with your skill tags. You’re allowed 15 skill tags, make them count. Don’t guess. Go to the search bar on Upwork and:
- Type in your core skill
- Look at suggested searches
- Note the software/tools clients associate with that skill
- Pay attention to client results/intent keywords (e.g. "increase sales", "drive traffic")
Work Experience
You don’t have any Upwork work experience yet and that’s perfectly okay.
But what you do have is off-Upwork experience, and that’s what should be used strategically in your work experience section.
Here’s the smart approach:
Go on Upwork and search for job posts in your niche. Pay attention to the titles clients use. You’ll see patterns like:
- “Power BI Specialist Needed to Build Dashboard”
- “AI Copy Editor for Fintech Blog”
- “Product Designer Wanted for Healthcare Startup”
These job titles reflect the keywords clients are searching for, and that Upwork’s algorithm is indexing.
So instead of writing vague roles like “Freelancer” or “Self-employed”, use specific titles that match those client search terms:
❌ Don’t write: Freelancer
✅ Write: Power BI Specialist – Built automated reports for SME clients
❌ Don’t write: Data Enthusiast
✅ Write: Data Analyst – Visualized 12 months of sales data using Tableau
If you've worked with a startup or NGO before Upwork, frame it this way:
✅Product Designer – Designed user flow for mental health startup (off-Upwork project)
✅ AI Copy Editor – Edited 25+ articles for a Nigerian SaaS company (off-Upwork)
This does two things:
✅ Makes your profile more searchable
✅ Helps clients trust your experience, even if it wasn’t through Upwork
Remember, your goal is to align your experience with how clients think and search. The more relevant your profile feels to their job post, the higher your chances of being shortlisted.
if i had to land my first $3K automation client in 10 days
here's exactly how i'd do it:
day 1-2: build something for yourself first
pick ONE annoying task you do every week
onboarding, reporting, lead tracking, content pipeline, whatever
build the automation in n8n
it doesn't need to be perfect
it needs to WORK for you
you're not learning theory
you're solving a real problem
day 3: screenshot everything
document what it does
take videos of it running
show the before/after time
this is your proof
not that you CAN build
but that you DID build
day 4-5: find 10 people with the same problem
not random people
people in YOUR industry who do what you do
reach out:
"hey, i automated [task] for myself.
saved me 4 hours/week.
thought you might have the same issue?"
you're not selling yet
you're validating
day 6: listen to what they actually need
they'll say "yeah but i need it to also do X"
perfect
write that down
now you know what version 2 looks like
and you have a reason to follow up
day 7: make the offer
"so i'm launching this with a few people. normally this would be $5K to build.
i'm doing it for $3K because i need case studies. interested?"
key word: "launching"
not "i'm new"
not "i'm learning"
LAUNCHING
day 8: get paid first
DO NOT BUILD UNTIL YOU HAVE MONEY
i don't care if they seem serious
i don't care if they "definitely want it"
get 50% upfront minimum
once paid:
→ they're committed
→ you're motivated
→ you're not wasting time
day 9-10: build it
you already built version 1 for yourself
you know n8n
you know the problem
just adapt what you made
use AI to speed up the boring parts
use your brain for the logic
- ship it
- get feedback
- iterate
real talk:
you're going to feel unqualified
you're going to think "i'm not ready"
you're going to want more practice first
ignore that
the only difference between you and someone charging $10K?
they started before they felt ready
solve one problem well.
charge for it.
repeat.
