The chip selloff hit a historic low yesterday, and a SpaceX report is now rattling telecoms too.
Futures now: Dow -0.6% (about -300 to -370 pts), S&P 500 -0.2%, Nasdaq 100 roughly flat
Brent crude: topped $114, a 6-month high
What's moving markets:
- Telecoms slide on a SpaceX report. $T, $VZ and $TMUS are all down more than 3% premarket after a report that SpaceX is in talks about launching a nationwide wireless carrier program. Tower operators are rallying instead, with $CCI up 8.5% and $AMT up 5.6%.
- AI stocks try to stabilise. $NVDA is up 0.4% after Thursday's 4.4% drop, and $CRWV is up 2% after hitting a fresh 17-month low. $SPCX (SpaceX) is up 2.2%, and Meta and AMD are also recovering premarket.
- Oil surges on Iran strike reports. Brent jumped above $114 on reports of potential fresh US and Israeli strikes on Iran, adding to inflation worries ahead of next week's Fed meeting.
- $MRNA slips another 4%. The stock is heading for its worst week in three months after a setback for its cancer vaccine rally on Thursday.
- $DECK falls ~9% premarket. Q2 EPS of $2.31 beat the $1.80 estimate, but revenue of $1.48B missed, and it cut its FY27 sales guidance below expectations.
The Fed meets next week, with markets watching inflation and oil closely.
After a 6.7% single-day chip crash, is this the washout that clears the way, or only the first leg down?

Rising rates just hit the world's biggest alternative asset manager.
$BX reported Q3 distributable earnings down 9.2% to $1.72B ($1.32 a share), still beating the $1.26 estimate. Dealmaking slowed, and the $30.1B it deployed was the lowest of the year.
The damage was concentrated in its core: real estate earnings fell 10% and private equity fell 7%. Blackstone raised property valuation cap rates across its holdings, and its opportunistic real estate funds declined 3.2%.
Not everything cracked. Assets under management rose 10% to $1.37T, fee-related earnings grew 6%, and BREIT has now posted 21 straight months of positive returns.
CEO Schwarzman called it a "historic increase" in global bond yields, with Treasury yields at their highest in decades.
If the biggest player in private markets is feeling it, who else is next?

Tesla, Meta, and IBM all beat on earnings, and the market is selling them anyway.
Futures now: Dow -0.6%, S&P 500 -1.0%, Nasdaq 100 -1.6%
Brent crude: ~$111, rebounding
What's moving markets:
- $TSLA falls ~4% premarket despite a beat. Q3 EPS of $0.48 vs $0.43 expected, revenue of $28.05B vs $27.88B. It cut its 2026 capital spending forecast to about $20B and lowered its annual sales goal, raising questions about its AI and robotics pace.
- $META beats, but investors stay cautious. Q3 revenue of $64.60B vs $63.37B expected, with stronger-than-expected guidance. It also introduced new non-voting shares to help fund its AI buildout, renewing scrutiny of the cost.
- $IBM drops ~7%. Q3 EPS of $2.95 vs $2.86 expected, revenue of $17.1B vs $16.82B, and it raised its free cash flow outlook. But gross margin of 58.5% missed the 59.1% estimate.
- Global tech stocks are lower across Asia and Europe, and oil is climbing again on Middle East tensions.
When three companies beat and still get sold, is the market done rewarding AI spending, or just taking a breather after a big run?

SpaceX just blew past estimates, and Musk is floating a Tesla merger.
Futures now: S&P 500 +0.2%, Nasdaq 100 +0.4% to +0.6%, Dow flat to +0.1%
Brent crude: ~$110 (+1.2%)
Gold: ~$4,120 (-0.6%)
What's moving markets:
- $SPCX (SpaceX) crushes earnings, stock jumps 7% to 9% premarket. Q3 revenue of $14.58B vs $12.7B expected (+161% YoY), with its first profit as a public company, driven by AI infrastructure and satellite growth.
- Musk floats a SpaceX-Tesla merger. Both companies formed special committees to weigh a deal, though Musk played down the chance of anything imminent. Combined value is about $3.5 trillion.
- $NFLX falls ~6% premarket. Q3 profit beat estimates, but it lowered its 2026 ad revenue guidance and its Q4 revenue forecast fell short.
- AI trade gets a lift. SpaceX and $SMCI (Super Micro Computer) results are boosting chip and AI names this morning.
- Oil edges higher on mixed reports about US-Iran diplomacy.
Does a SpaceX-Tesla merger make sense, or is Musk just testing how much the market will believe?

The AI boom doesn't just run on chips, it runs on cheap liquidity, and the Fed controls the tap.
The idea that rates only hurt AI companies by raising their borrowing costs is a fallacy. The bigger channel is overall financial conditions: each hike tightens credit across the whole risk spectrum, from Treasurys to corporate loans to stocks.
That squeezes the leveraged investors who buy risky assets, and appetite for IPOs, junk bonds, private credit and securitizations dries up. Those are the markets AI's huge spending leans on.
The bottom line: if the only way to get inflation back to 2% is to drain that liquidity, the Fed can do it, and probably will.
Can the AI boom outrun a Fed that's focused on inflation?

Oil is back near $100, and AI stocks are wobbling again, right as earnings season heats up.
Futures now:
Dow: 52,269 (+87 pts, +0.17%)
S&P 500: 7,729 (-0.07%)
Nasdaq 100: 29,593 (-129 pts, -0.43%)
Brent Crude: ~$111.50 (+1.8%)
Gold: $4,133 (-0.6%)
What’s moving markets:
- $GM beats, but the stock falls ~7% premarket. Q3 EPS of $3.70 vs $3.63 expected, revenue of $50.0B vs $48.7B. It narrowed its 2026 EPS guidance, and the market didn’t like it.
- AI trade wobbles again. Chip stocks are slipping premarket, and $CRWV (CoreWeave) and $NBIS (Nebius) are lower, giving back part of Monday’s rebound. OpenAI is reportedly seeking a $30B funding round, which put AI valuations back in focus.
- Oil pushes higher. Crude jumped Monday on Houthi attacks on Saudi energy infrastructure, and WTI is back above $100 this morning.
- Industrial earnings this morning: $GEV, $RTX, $MMM, $NOC and $HAL all report before the open. (GE Aerospace trades as $GE, so swap if you prefer.)
Does oil at $100 plus a wobbling AI trade make this the week the earnings beats stop being enough?

Elon Musk just made it official: he's now CEO of Neuralink, on top of Tesla and SpaceX.
A new Tesla securities filing updated his bio to list Neuralink among the companies where he's CEO, while The Boring Company still lists him only as a founder.
He's called himself Neuralink's CEO before, and everyone assumed he was running it, but the company disclosed little about its governance for a decade. In August it filed paperwork in Nevada naming its directors, including president DJ Seo, Musk's family office head Jared Birchall, Antonio Gracias, Joe Lonsdale, and Scott Nolan.
So the world's most stretched CEO now has three companies to run, plus whatever else is on his plate.
Is Musk spreading himself too thin, or is this just making official what was always true?

The market just had its worst week since June; "Black Monday" crash calls are trending, and futures are pointing the other way.
Futures now: Nasdaq 100 +1.1%, S&P +0.4% to +0.5%, Dow ~+0.1%
Crude (WTI): ~$96.90/bbl (-2.1%)
What's moving markets:
- Chips bounce after a brutal stretch. A chip ETF is up about 3% premarket and is set for its first daily gain in 10 sessions. Friday marked the semiconductor index's eighth straight decline, the longest losing streak since 2006. $MU, $AVGO, $QCOM and $TSM are up 2% to 5% premarket.
- Oil slides. WTI is down about 2% to roughly $97 a barrel, easing pressure on inflation worries.
- Bessent blames September's hot inflation on an "energy shock." The Treasury Secretary tied the 3.7% CPI print to energy prices.
- Social media is buzzing with "Black Monday" crash calls on the 39th anniversary of the 1987 crash, but futures are pointing higher this morning.
After eight straight down days for chips, is this the bounce that sticks, or just a pause before the earnings tests?

Wholesale inflation just had its second-biggest jump on record, and bond yields fell anyway.
Futures now: S&P about +0.2%, Dow about +0.3%, Nasdaq 100 slightly lower
10-yr yield: ~5.09%, well below this week’s 5.3% peak
Gold: ~$4,200/oz
Fed odds: an October rate hike is now priced at about 14%, down from 26% earlier
What’s moving markets:
-Fed Chair Warsh gives no signal on October. He offered no forward guidance, and traders pared back rate-hike bets sharply. That helped yields hold below the week’s highs.
-Wholesale inflation exploded, but yields fell anyway. Headline PPI jumped 1.3%, the second-largest gain on record, and core PPI had its biggest rise in four years. Despite that, Treasury yields dropped Thursday.
-Social Security gets a 3.6% COLA for 2027. The cost-of-living boost lands after this week’s hot inflation data.
-September industrial production is due at 9:15 AM ET (consensus +0.4%), after import/export prices at 8:30. $MTB, $CFG and $RF also report before the open, and next week brings $NFLX, $GM, $RTX and $MMM earnings.
Why did yields fall on a record-hot PPI: is the bond market looking past inflation, or is Warsh’s silence doing the heavy lifting?

Inflation just came in hotter than expected, and it's not only gas anymore.
September CPI rose 3.7% from a year ago, above the 3.6% forecast and up from 3.4% in August. Monthly prices climbed 0.6%.
Gasoline jumped 9.1% in the month and drove more than half of the increase, as the Iran war pushes up oil prices. But core CPI, which strips out food and energy, also beat forecasts at 0.3% monthly and 2.6% annually, and shelter rose 0.4%, its fastest monthly pace in five months.
Airfares are up 22% over the past year, while groceries ticked down 0.1%.
It's the last inflation reading before the midterms, and it lands as the Fed debates another hike.
Does this push the Fed toward a December hike, or is it just an oil shock that fades?

Inflation data lands in a few hours, and a hot print could put rate hikes back on the table.
Futures now: Dow +0.3%, S&P +0.2%, Nasdaq 100 roughly flat
Crude (WTI): ~$95/bbl, still elevated
Fed odds: about a 22% chance of a quarter-point hike, per CME FedWatch
What's moving markets:
- September CPI at 8:30 AM ET is the main event. Economists expect headline inflation to accelerate to 3.6% YoY (+0.6% monthly, vs 3.4% prior). A hot print could revive rate-hike bets.
- Fed's Williams on rates. The NY Fed president said one more hike this year looks appropriate, but he doesn't expect more will be needed in 2027. Treasury yields eased on the comments.
- AI trade tries to steady. $ASML reports today and $TSM reports Thursday. South Korea's KOSPI bounced after a 12% drop over the past five days.
- $MS, $BLK and $STT also report before the open. The Fed's Beige Book and Richmond Fed's Barkin come later today, and PPI and retail sales follow Thursday.
Does a hot CPI revive the hike trade today, or has the market already priced in 3.6%?
