HANDS OFF AFRICA! STOP CHOCKING AFRICA!

In Kinshasa’s Ndolo Airport, in front of a sea of Congolese faithful and a global audience watching closely, Pope Francis delivered one of the most powerful rebukes of his papacy.

“Hands off Africa!”

This was a very clear message. No beating about the bush. Just straight to the point. He made these remarks when he visited the DRC in 2023. This was one of Pope Francis’ 5 visits to Africa during his papacy.

The phrase made global news, largely because it resonated not just in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) but throughout a continent that has long borne the brunt of external exploitation and internal complicity.

In that moment, Pope Francis transformed his pastoral visit into a prophetic denunciation of the forces, both foreign and domestic, that have siphoned Africa’s wealth while leaving its people in cycles of poverty and conflict.

You can’t help but remember that moment, now that the Vatican has announced that the Pontiff is no more.

The DRC is a land of staggering natural riches, as we always say. I mean, cobalt, gold, diamonds, copper, you name it. But these resources have often been more curse than blessing. Multinational corporations, warlords, and corrupt officials have colluded in systems that prioritize profit over human dignity.

The pope’s statement cut through diplomatic niceties. Remember, he leads the Vatican.

“Stop choking Africa,” he urged. “It is not a mine to be stripped or a terrain to be plundered.”

This wasn’t the first time Francis spoke in such stark terms, but it was the most direct. It reflected his consistent advocacy for what he and many others call the “global south” nations and peoples structurally disadvantaged in the global economy.

By telling the world to take its hands off Africa, he was condemning not only colonial legacies, but also neocolonial patterns maintained through debt, extraction, and political interference.

As the world remembers him, perhaps Africa must also remember that his words also carried an internal challenge. His address in Kinshasa was not just for outsiders. He called on African leaders to “build societies without corruption,” to serve the common good over self-interest.

To me, what gave weight to “Hands off Africa” was not just the phrase’s rhetorical power, but its context. This was not a scripted speech from Rome; it was a message delivered on African soil, to an African audience, from a pope who had taken the time to visit, listen, and witness firsthand the resilience and pain of the people.

Of course, to many people, he doesn’t mean much, because he may not be their religious leader. In the context of geopolitics, however, he is a powerful figure and someone had to say something. Someone has to keep saying something!

On the morning of Monday, 21st April, 2025, the Vatican announced the death of Pope Francis who in recent months battled an illness. He was 88 at his death.

When a pope dies, the Catholic Church enters a period known as ‘sede vacante’ and that’s Latin for “the seat being vacant.”

During this time, all major decisions of the Church are suspended until a new pope is elected. The governance of the Church temporarily shifts to the College of Cardinals, though their authority is limited strictly to matters necessary for day-to-day operations and preparations for the conclave.

The Camerlengo, a cardinal appointed by the pope, is responsible for managing the Church’s temporal affairs during this transition. The Camerlengo is the one who announced the Pope’s death, as is the expected tradition.

Within 15 to 20 days of the pope’s death, the cardinals will gather in Vatican City for a papal conclave. This solemn and secretive process will take place in the Sistine Chapel, where the cardinals will cast ballots in multiple rounds of voting until one candidate receives a two-thirds majority.

Once elected, the new pope will choose a papal name and will be presented to the public with the traditional announcement, “We have a pope.”

It is a great event to witness and it’s always great to know what happens. You can watch the Netflix movie The Two Popes if you’d like more insight. It is, in my view, most befitting, considering it tells the story of Pope Francis himself and his ascension to the papacy.
