Guns are technology. Government regulates how they are deployed.
Vehicles are technology. Government regulates how they are operated.
Nuclear weapons are technology. A few governments regulate who can have them.
AI is is also technology. Rampant, purely capitalistic deployment will not end well as the potential for employment and social disruption is massive. Government must regulate how this too is deployed.
China is doing this rationally. See, for example: https://t.co/1HaIOciYF3.
I really don't understand why regulation of technology *deployment* is questioned by smart people. Do you really want tech bros in California controlling your society? I'm not asking the government to do anything in particular right now (it is still early) but saying "let market forces decide and government STAY OUT" is too capitalist for me for this one. That extreme is what @advocatalk will probably want :). Even Advocata is not against gun control (AFAIK).
I am *not* advocating government control of the development of technology. Sri Lanka should develop our own gun technology, vehicle technology, nuclear technology and of course AI technology as much as possible. What I am against is unregulated deployment of any of these things as they are all potentially weapons of mass destruction.
Hey @mangkaru your thoughts too as the article seemed say you totally disagreed.
