@ChristianSelig In summary:
For the love of god, don’t buy an expensive DAS. ~£150 can get you a fullblown NAS with 4-12 bays of expansion. If your needs are super basic, use a cheap adapter and do SMB from your Mac, then upgrade to a full on NAS later.

@ChristianSelig If power draw is a concern 𝘢𝘯𝘥 you’re already using the Mac Mini as an always on servyboi, then hell yeah - setting up an SMB share with an external USB DAS (or even just 1-2 USB to SATA adapters) would do you just fine as a starting point.
@ChristianSelig Do you need 2-Several drives worth of SATA Storage, or are planning on using 2.5” HDDs/SSDs? Get the ITX J4125 and a cheap case.
Do you want a lot of very fast NVMe storage? Get the little Topton NVMe NAS. Maximum functionality, Dual 2.5G NICs, v. fast. Wow.
@ChristianSelig I’m starting to realize that your replies may not need/require/be able to sustain these levels/magnitude of my extremely specific/cursed knowledge on this subject. To simplify it:
Do you need 1-2 drives worth of (SATA) storage? Mac Mini SMB share it with cheap external adapters.
@ChristianSelig Opt 3. “I already have some SATA drives, a case, AND have (or don’t mind spending £25 on) a 7th gen Intel CPU), total ~£65”.

@ChristianSelig Opt 2: “I already have some SATA drives and an old case kicking around”
£75 Gets you an integrated j4125 (see: Many Synology NAS’ses CPU Du-(𝘠𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳)Jour. Very low idle 10-Bit HDR support via quicksync.)

@ChristianSelig In which case I bring 𝘢𝘴𝘴istance.
Opt.1: Do you need *fast* storage?
£160 you can get a 4 “Bay” NVMe NAS which will idle under 10w. Chuck TrueNAS on, and you’re in full blown “Yeah, I cosplay as a Server Admin” land of containers and services.

@ChristianSelig IMO what you’re 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 asking is:
“Starting a brand-new skill tree here. I understand my lack of understanding. Am very sore from standing-under/getting positively cumstr’d by a Piper Perri meme’s worth of Option Paralysis Demons. Send help (see: sense of certainty)”.
@ChristianSelig That said - I do want to point out that I’ve built *many* NAS…es’s that draw under 10w idle. My i5-8500 based system sits around 6w at the moment. Here’s a 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘮𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘥 𝘴𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘴𝘩𝘦𝘦𝘵 (fuck that’s hot) for….”reference” https://t.co/TMS8kOMhpc
@nclfuzzy@LizzieTheQueen6@sopjap I think one of the big distinctions that you’re starting to see emerge is the difference between “Liberals” and “The Left”. Liberals still support & uphold the same Corporate overlords as the right, but sometimes, if you behave, they let you have one extra hospital (as a treat).
@denialtwister31@punishedmother Yeah, I’m down for woke mob’n up some cancel culture on that optic sandpaper.
The only thing I can imagine that being sold as is a knockoff “Former Hockey Commentator/Current Elderly Racist” costume.
