Have seen some friends hesitate to accept promotion for the same reason.

Once you cross the 50LPA mark, you have to pay additional 10% surcharge on top of 31.2% tax you're already paying. So, basically whatever increase in salary due to promotion, most of it will go to Govt as tax, then obviously why would you take more burden at work just to sponsor freebies.
