PRESS STATEMENT

In the last 24 hours, social media has exploded over my interview with Mehdi Hassan, albeit with varied opinions. Let me set the record straight.

When I signed on to the privileged job granted to me by Mr. President, I was well aware of its implications. Selling ice cream, looking fine, and seeking the praises of men were never part of it. Some of the fiercest critics of my interview can not even stand local TV anchors. But the task of promoting and defending the President and his administration is what I do with ease and joy. I am prepared to appear before any interviewer, anywhere in the world, any day and at any time, to defend this government and its policies.

I have never, and will never, subscribe to ducking or dodging interviews on matters that concern promoting and defending the administration I was appointed to serve. It is the least of what is required of me.

Head to Head contacted me requesting an interview, stating that they wanted to challenge our government on security, the economy, and corruption. Nowhere in our almost six months of communication did they mention that they were going to challenge my past. If that had been their plan, ethically and professionally, they were supposed to inform me so I could prepare my response. But that’s okay, ethically, that is on them, not on me.

I refused to swallow the pill of Mehdi’s “opposition research-style journalism,” and even today, if you carefully compare what he read as quotes from organisations and groups, you will see that many were inaccurate and some were outright fake news. But I will leave that for another day.

As for what I said about President Tinubu in the past, I am glad those were things I said when I was in the opposition saddle with such zeal. It is all politics. Half of Donald Trump’s cabinet is made up of people who once spoke against him, and quite a number of people in our own cabinet also spoke against President Tinubu in the past. Those things do not bother him if you care to know.

The majority of the naysayers are members of the opposition and their sympathisers. It does not bother me one bit. Their temporary excitement over the interview has not lasted and will not last, because it does not take away their obvious problem of lack of vision, mission in conducting and managing a political party; yet they seek to manage Nigeria. Clearly they have no path to victory and no alternative policies or program for the Nigerian people. And if they say they do, they can as well go to head to head and be interrogated on that; as the saying in Hausa goes “Ga fili Ga doki”

I conclude by thanking the many Nigerians and non-Nigerians who sent in their commendations over my brave defence of our government in an interview where the anchor would hardly let you answer a question unless it suited his narrative.

I still have admiration and respect for Mehdi Hassan as arguably the best debater on the planet. I look forward to part two of the Head to Head interview, and I am glad that by then questions about my past will no longer be news so that we can focus on our administration’s policies, programs and what we have achieved so far.

Last year, a friend of mine started feeling off. Nothing dramatic, just one of those moments where your body feels strange and your mind won’t rest. So he decided to run a full body check.

My younger brother, Dr. Mo, helped him with a list of tests to do. The following weekend, he went to a reputable hospital in Abuja. Blood samples were taken, and the only test left was a semen analysis, so he went home to provide that.

A few hours later, he returned.

But the moment he walked in, something felt….. off.

They told him to sit and wait for the doctor because “only doctors give HIV results”. He said he understood, since he regularly checks himself anyway, but he couldn’t ignore the subtle shift in how the nurse and receptionist were behaving around him. The silence felt heavy.

Then he pressed them.

That’s when one of the nurses asked, almost coldly,
“Why don’t you use protection?”

That was the moment his heart dropped.

He called me immediately.
“Slim, where are you? Where is Dr. Mo?”

I told him I was about to board a flight for a seminar and that my brother was at his office. He put both of us on a conference call and explained everything, his voice shaking.

We told him to calm down and wait for the doctor.

A while later, he called back crying uncontrollably. Real tears. Mucus. Panic. The kind of cry that comes from deep fear.

He said the doctor told him he was HIV positive.

They explained that the test had been run twice. The first showed faint visibility, the second was bold and “confirmed”. The doctor consoled him and immediately prescribed antiretroviral medication. He paid ₦300,000 upfront for a three month supply since it wasn’t in stock.

When he asked why it was so expensive, they told him global funding had changed and drugs were now costlier.

That evening, he called me again and told me everything. This was a man preparing for marriage. His whole future felt like it collapsed in one afternoon.

Within a week of emotional breakdowns, he told his family and his fiancée. She cried endlessly at first, then after testing herself and confirming she was negative, she stopped picking his calls. Eventually, her family cut off communication too.

But through it all, one person never stopped pushing, my brother, Dr. Mo.

He kept insisting, “We need to repeat these tests somewhere else.”

My friend resisted at first. He believed the hospital was one of the best. But Dr. Mo drove to his house himself and took him to a diagnostic centre.

They ran the test.

Negative.

He didn’t even know how to react. Relief felt suspicious. So another test was done. Same protocols. Same careful confirmation process.

Negative again.

Dr. Mo looked at him and said calmly,
“Right now it’s one positive, one negative. We need one more to be sure.”

The next day, they went to a government hospital. Two different testing methods were used.

Both came back negative.

That was the moment the weight lifted. Joy, disbelief, anger, relief all mixed together. He said he wanted to call his fiancée immediately.

We told him to call only to inform her of the wrong diagnosis, not to ask for anything back. Some things happen to reveal more than they take.

Because sometimes the real test isn’t medical. It’s life showing you who stays when fear enters the room.
