What the Futurists Meant by “War Is Hygiene"

In 1909, Filippo Tommaso Marinetti declared that “war is the world’s only hygiene.” While this sounds very stupid and illogical. We all know that war is horrible and disgusting right?? For the Futurists though, war is a spiritual necessity, a brutal reality in our nature meant to cleanse humanity of stagnation and force the individual to conquer themselves and move forward.

War was a state of absolute discomfort. In this extreme state, the individual's battle was not against an external enemy, but against their own internal weaknesses. By winning this battle the "old man" was destroyed, allowing a "New Man" to be born. To the futurist, war is a deep psychological state.
