Conversations on mothering Black sons where we uplift the beauty, hope, and joy of Black motherhood. Founded with love by @habeebahgrimes #BlackMothersMatter
With my mother, #CorettaScottKing. To be mothered is a beautiful, grace-filled experience. As we get closer to #MothersDay, I pray for love and comfort to those who cannot rest in a mother’s embrace...and to mothers who can no longer hold their children.
Celebrating the women of No Crystal Stair Podcast on this International Women’s Day. In awe of the ways they powerfully show up in the world and grateful for their love for Black women and children, and for humanity.
Honor and respect to our first teachers of Black history, our beautiful Black mothers. May we treat our #BlackHistory as sacred wisdom to be passed to each generation with reverence and joy.
This is my favorite opening of any episode of #UnitedShades. It aired in 2019. & it feels even MORE relevant (& maybe even more shocking) after the #TyreNichols video.👇🏿
Praying for the mothers, and my own mother, who suffer incomprehensible grief. Praying for the families missing our loved ones and re-experiencing our trauma with each new tragedy.

Creating No Crystal Stair Podcast was an act of self-preservation and communal care. After more than a dozen conversations with Black mothers, I am awestruck by every single one of them. We are transcendent, beautiful, and so very worthy of every good thing.

"I have been tired for 46 years. My parents was tired before me & their parents were tired...I always said if I lived to get grown...I was going to try to get something for my mother & do something for the Black man of the South. If it would cost me my life...” - Fannie Lou Hamer
“She has her own set of issues and pain and all of that. And so I can’t look at everything that happened to me as a child like it’s personal. It wasn’t.“
- Donnella Jefferson, Mothering The Self While Mothering A Son (Ep. 2)
“As far as my mother is concerned, I think that my empathy has improved […] I try my best to look at her […] through a lens of she was a woman and a whole different person before she became my mother with dreams and aspirations and all these others things that she wanted.”
May all who raise children, love them for a lifetime, and grieve them when the are lost know love, justice and deep care in our lifetimes and future generations.
The cover art for @NoCrystalStrPod features a photo of my mother during a time when her fortitude was greatly tested and her dreams for our family on the verge of shattering. Still, she crafted new dreams for herself and our family, and persisted in order to make them a reality.
In my conversations with Black mothers as part of this effort, I hear in their stories and journeys the same clarity and determination I witness in my mother. Honoring all who are mothering children they birthed or children they love, on this Mother’s Day and every day.
The joy of this podcast and beauty of the conversations it captures feels like much needed resistance in these times. Two new episodes since my last tweet. I hope listeners find respite in our words. #blackmothersmatter
