In 1986, 20-year-old Christopher Knight quit his job, drove into the Maine woods, and kept driving until his car ran out of gas.

He walked into the trees and did not come out for 27 years.

All that time, Christopher lived completely alone in a hidden camp.

To survive the freezing, brutal winters, he relied on absolute discipline. He carefully erased his tracks in the snow and kept walking through the night just to keep from freezing to death.

For supplies, he broke into cabins around the lake, stealing food, batteries, propane, and clothes. Over the years, he committed more than 1,000 burglaries without being caught.

Locals knew someone was out there, but no one ever saw him. Children grew up afraid of the man in the woods. They called him the North Pond Hermit.

In all those years, Christopher spoke to one person. A hiker walked near his camp, and he said "Hi."

That was it.

Then, in April 2013, Christopher triggered a hidden motion detector while stealing food from a nearby camp. A game warden arrived and caught him.

He was 47 years old. He served seven months in jail and was released.

He later said the hardest part was not the 27 winters alone in the woods. It came after his arrest, when he had to talk to people again.

In 1990s New York, keeping cash close at hand was a normal part of everyday life. Before mobile banking and instant transfers, people relied on physical money for nearly everything, whether it was kept at home, stored at a business, or carried in their wallets.

At home, cash could be stored in safes, lockboxes, drawers, closets, or other private hiding places. Some families kept emergency money on hand for unexpected expenses, while business owners might bring home cash after a busy day. For people who valued privacy or simply preferred physical currency, having several thousand dollars nearby wasn’t necessarily unusual.

Cars could also serve as temporary storage. Business owners, contractors, salespeople, and others who regularly handled cash might carry envelopes or bags of bills in their vehicles while traveling between businesses, banks, suppliers, and home. During a busy day, a car could essentially become a mobile safe.

The biggest difference was that cash was tangible. If you earned $5,000 in cash, you could physically see the stack in front of you. You could divide it into envelopes, lock it away, leave some in the car, or take it home.

There was no banking app displaying your balance and no instant transfer waiting to go through. Your money existed physically in your hands.

That also changed how wealth felt. Cash sitting inside a house or car felt immediate and real. You could count it, organize it, hide it, protect it, and access it whenever you needed.

The 1990s were among the last periods when keeping significant amounts of physical cash nearby could feel completely ordinary. Before money became mostly numbers on screens, it was something people actually carried, stored, counted, and guarded.

According to the history within Dune, humanity once depended heavily on advanced computers and artificial intelligence. Over time, control over these machines became concentrated among a powerful few, leading to oppression and a gradual loss of human independence. The conflict that followed, known as the Butlerian Jihad, destroyed the thinking machines and created a lasting cultural and religious ban against them.

The principle is captured in the commandment from the Orange Catholic Bible: “Thou shalt not make a machine in the likeness of a human mind.”

Because of this prohibition, any technology designed to replicate or replace human thought is forbidden. Instead, humanity trained itself to develop abilities that machines once provided. Mentats became living computers, capable of advanced calculations and analysis. The Bene Gesserit mastered extraordinary levels of mental and physical discipline. The Spacing Guild Navigators used spice-enhanced prescience to chart safe faster-than-light travel routes that computers would have previously calculated.

Frank Herbert’s vision reflected concerns about humanity becoming dependent on systems that concentrate power and remove personal responsibility. In Dune, the ban on thinking machines forces people to unlock their own potential rather than allow technology to control their decisions.
