Refuse Collection Workers Make Horrifying Discovery After Finding Decomposing Body of Young Woman Stuffed Inside Black Refuse Bag Behind Athlone Stadium

A decomposing body of a young woman was discovered inside a black refuse bag in Kewtown, Athlone, on Tuesday morning, 23 June 2026. Refuse collection workers made the shocking discovery at about 10:00 a.m. on Cross Boulevard Street behind Athlone Stadium after noticing a strong stench coming from what they initially believed was ordinary rubbish.

The victim, believed to be a coloured woman aged about 28, was found naked inside the plastic bag on a patch of grass along the sidewalk. Reports indicated that her arms and legs were protruding from the bag because of the way her body had been positioned. Athlone police spokesperson Thembakazi Mpendukana confirmed officers responded to the scene after the discovery of the unknown woman's decomposed body.

Police have opened an inquest docket while a murder investigation is underway to establish the cause of death and the circumstances surrounding the incident. Follow-up reports indicated the victim was positively identified through a bracelet she was wearing, with community members describing her as well known in the Bokmakerie area. Formal confirmation by her family, including DNA testing, was still pending at the time of the initial reports. Some accounts also reported blood splatter near the scene.

The discovery has left residents shocked, with many expressing concern over the apparent dumping of the woman's body in a public area. Local community policing forums have also raised concerns about safety in the area. Police investigations are continuing, and authorities are expected to provide further updates as more information becomes available.
