An Indian professional, Ankit Purohit, who has worked in Japan for the past 10 years, is offering a glimpse into the country’s workplace culture, saying that adapting to its values is just as important as securing a job.

Purohit shared that Japanese offices place a strong emphasis on punctuality, discipline, respect, teamwork and professional boundaries. He said employees are expected to arrive before office hours begin, while hierarchy is not reflected in daily routines, with even company CEOs commuting by train.

He also highlighted workplace etiquette, including uninterrupted lunch breaks, elevator courtesy and overtime policies. According to Purohit, employees are paid even for 15 minutes of overtime, and managers generally do not contact staff after they have logged out or on their days off.
