This is literally an open admission that they have no interest in building a capable public sector. Just hand the functions to private companies so profit can be extracted from basic needs.
The poor will pay more. Prepaid meters will cut people off faster. Unprofitable areas will get inferior service. That is how privatisation of municipal services always works.

The crisis in municipalities is cadre deployment, corruption and zero accountability. The answer is not to sell the work to their white friends companies. The answer is to rebuild public institutions that actually deliver and face consequences when they don’t.
Government is not a tender board for capital.

The DA’s in the news today pushing businesses to run public services. It’s not new - it’s their manifesto’s default, from water to electricity to policing.

Cape Town is proof it doesn’t work the way they claim - the City’s own electricity supply model is already run for profit - surplus up from 8.38% to 12.60% - and it still overcharged residents above what NERSA, South Africa’s independent electricity regulator, approved, for three straight years running.

The model is more profit & less accountability.

Businesses don’t run public services out of charity - they run them for a return. Cape Town already paid the price.
